I have only had two satnav, my first was a tomtom 1 many years ago. For the past 6/7 years i have been using a TOMTOM 720. However i dont really want to chuck £40-£50 at it for new maps when the hardware is so old it could go pop at any time. So i have been looking at a new satnav as we are driving down to spain later this year and it would be good to have some up-to-date maps.

The Garmins seem excellent value for money but not having had one before i am concerned as to how i will get on with it. I am looking at either the 2445 or 2495 both LMT, life time maps and traffic. I drive about 40k per year so traffic would be a nice touch. These can be had for £90-£120.

Anyone have experience of these models, should i make the jumps or is there an equivalent TOMTOM that will cut the mustard?
The 720 will be put into the Elise for itn planning when we do runs etc, i know the new ones dont come with this feature.

Cheers

I have one of the garmin LMT versions (not sure which one). Have found the traffic to be handy, also the lifetime map updates. Some minor road changes might not show for a while, depending when Navteq are told about them. You can go to Navteq to advise them of the changes though.

Traffic updates rely on local commercial radio stations for the signal.

I use the 2495 and quite like it. Haven't used a TomTom for years now and wouldn't go back. Garmin is great on updates as I see it.

Have had a 2445 for 6 months, and have problems with it shutting down regularly. Am now on replacement unit, which does the same. Would probably choose TT based on my experience.

Overall i think it is OK. Very much like the old 720. Has micro SD expansion, bluetooth etc. I like the fact that it turns off when the car is turned off and back on again when you start the car. My old one did not do this, useful when filling up with petrol etc.
The voice control is pretty crap, i like the bigger screen and the mount (now part of the unit) is much better than before.

It has life time maps which was a big thing for me and i got it for £119 which i thought was a good price.
