Parts & Labour warranty for my 996?

I've had my 996 for almost 3 months, which means I'm getting calls from VGS asking if I'd like to renew the cover that came on the car when I collected the thing from the dealers. They're quoting £230 for another 12 months cover, which is certainly a better deal than I was offered at the time of purchase.

Looking at my paperwork (which I didn't really do at the time because I'd just bought a Porsche and was slightly distracted) I see I've got "3 star" coverage and a claim limit of £2000. Obviously that's not going to cover an engine rebuild (touch wood I'll never need one), but could come in handy if the dual mass flywheel falls apart. A quick search of the forum shows that VGS isn't very popular, however:

Do people have recommended alternatives? The car is currently as it left the factory and I'll be maintaining the service history on it. Having read all the 996 horror stories online I'm starting to think that maintaining some sort of mechanical insurance is a good idea, but I don't want to be paying my money for a less than satisfactory service. Advice very thankfully received!

I would like to know this also, I am on the verge of buying a 996 but factoring in an engine rebuild. I looked into the warranty side and most companies are just not interested. If I can get a warranty that leaves me a little more to spend on the car. (I know buy best etc but with the engines I would want 5k put aside in case)

I think you'd struggle to get a warranty to pay for a DMF, as it's often regarded as consumable.

Save your money, literally, is the standard advice for old 996s.

You need to look at a good maintenance scheme from a decent Porsche specialist like Hartech or Sports & Classic.

You'll get an annual service (whatever is due, minor, major, plugs etc all included), annual MOT and all labour for repairs and maintenance (i.e. even brake pads, clutch etc is only parts cost) all for circa £1000/year i.e. not too much more than you'd spend on those things anyway. Ask Hartech but I don't think many 996 rebuilds have parts cost of more than a grand or two, and chances are your engine won't fail anyway.

UVW is a partner with PCGB and offer a warranty scheme no idea if you have to be a member but suggest a call and ask . 0800 021 3030 no idea terms and conditions www.usedvechiclewarranty.co.uk and quote PCGB . and you can get your repairs done at the local OPC labour rates .
