5 months would normally mean the conversation could be as short as "it's not working, tata!".

Lack of contract isn't fatal, but I'd be tempted to get one done, and then get rid.

Yep you can get rid of someone up to a year w/o cause (althought I think this may have increased to two years now?)...but you can't if it's considered discrimination of any sort....

Sick days don't enter into it.

Focus on the perfomance issue, he isn't selling. Up to 12 months as said, you don't need a specific reason.

Don't mention the sickness, focus on the sales figures

Employees whose employment begins on or after 6 April 2012 will usually need to complete two years' service to be able to claim unfair dismissal.

If the sickness could potentially be a disability then take insured advice.
