Had a frantic call from OH saying the birds nest has fallen from the house and there are four chicks in the garden. RSPCA didn't want to help, they only rescue non-feathered birds apparently!

Came home and was greeted by these...

I phoned the RSPB for advice and they advised me to create a makeshift nest from a tub and place it back where it fell from, best I could come up with was this.....

I placed the remains of their nest in it too.

I literally have no idea if I've done right or wrong. They didn't seem injured, they scurried about and spread their wings fully when I scooped them up. Should I have given them food? If so what?

I couldn't just leave them on the ground they'd have been a cat's dinner in no time!

They're probably near enough ready to fledge anyway, or maybe the nest didn't fall and they jumped.

Interested to know what they are though - I'm sure someone on PH must be able to identify them - house martins?

Should have named the thread "Bird's nest has fallen". The nest was on the ground, but I think it hit the window sill, then landed on the lawn. So don't think they had too much of a bump.

RSPB lady said they were probably Housemartins. As I was heading back to work one of the chicks was standing on the edge of the red tub and an adult bird was flying back and forth feeding it I think!

Edited for rogue apostrophe.

Well done OP. Useless parents if they can't even provide a sturdy house for the kids.

Do look like house martins, very cute they are too. I would think the parents will carry on feeding them quite happily in their new mega plastic modern luxury home. smile

i would suggest that all of them trying that together may give you the reason the last one fell down!

Missed opportunity I feel. They eat them in France.

They could`ve been proper tasty fried up with a splash of lea and perrins.

I'm guessing that and the weight of their crap had something to do with it, judging by the amount deposited over the window sill and garden from where it fell! The new nest is held in place with 2 x 2 inch screws, should be a bit more gravity proof now!

Just seen the Mother flying back and forth to the "nest" and can hear chirps coming from it smile

Good job! I was expecting similar to us - we have a family of blue tits best every year in the bathroom vent on the back wall. One year they'd got to the point they were trying to fly, we were eating breakfast outside, and one plopped down next to us. Picked it up, put it on bathroom windowsill and it tried again - 3 attempts later it finally flew!

Well done OP smile

We had a fledgling blackbird in the garden for the last few days and unfortunately he died a couple of hours ago. Seemed like mum and dad were coming back to him fairly frequently, but I guess it wasn't to be. Quite sad about it to be honest. Still, life's rich tapestry and all that.

We had one drop into ours last year, they were nesting in some ivy on next doors wall, I came home from work and let the dogs out, next thing I hear is a bird going mental, go outside to be greeted by the sight of our rescue bh looking up at me with feathers sticking out of either side of her mouth! Managed to get it out in one piece and alive briefly but it died in my hand, shock maybe I don't know. frown

Just got a young pigeon off Guzzi, Magpie making loads of noise! He seems ok, if a bit weak. He's in a cat box with some food and water in the conservatory at the moment, we'll see how he progresses, if he makes it through the next day I'll put him in a bigger cage so he can stretch his wings and build his strength up, prior to release.
