Alternative Rear Lights - A Preview
Discussion
Having lost a rear light that fell out of its housing - I decided to embark on a radical alternative. I'm a long way from finishing the job having to decide on its final look (With or without panel gaps) plus I need to Stop, Prime, Top Coat and drop in a cool loking reverse light for the finished article - I thought I'd post a preview in the meantime. If you are one of those that like the councours look - then look away now!

That is a work of art. Absolutely beautiful. I would have that done on my car any day. You see, I don't like square lights, as I think the rear end of a quality sports car should have round lights. It's the one section of the Wedge that I think Mr Winterbottom didn't get quite right, the rear lights. The rest looks fantastic. These round lights of yours however, reminds me of the rear end of the Corvette C3 and I have always been a fan of them. If it wasn't for the fact that the Corvettes are left hand drive and nearly always automatic, I'd have one outside now. Tell us more about how you made these lights and what you intend to do, how much they cost to install etc. Very interesting indeed. You're not far from me. Maybe I'll pop down to see them one day. Well done Andy.

Hi Andy
Looking good mate, did you cut out a panel with the lights in or did you form the light hole yourself mate, cheers, Ralph
I used the old rear light chopping it into 2 parts at the corner. I grafted the corner section into the rear wing and pre-cut the holes into the straight section joining it at the corner. The lights and cups are from a Fiat Turbo Coupe. I sunk the cups into the holes and shaped the whole section once bonded in. I might still cut in the panel gaps on the other side for a comparison - these can be filled in again if they don't look ok...we'll see.Looking good mate, did you cut out a panel with the lights in or did you form the light hole yourself mate, cheers, Ralph
The inside will have to be bonded in at the seams with GRP otherwise it will crack - like I said still plenty of work to do but I love doing it all the same.
Brilliant!! I would love to know how you have done this.
I saw a wedge while browsing a few months ago, very similar, white to!
I agree with Tony.. Round lights on the back of a quality sports car
Ferarri 308 for example just look fantastic.
Having said that if any sports car can get away with square rear lights it would be the wedge.
What with its angular ways!
Great job mate love it!

If i was to change the rear lights on my wedge thats how it would be..I once saw a capri that had round seperated rear lights and they looked the dogs and i always thought that would suit the wedge..Yes there is another white wedge with round rear lights..Although i wasnt a fan of the frog looking front lights..(Sorry)..The wedge has a silly face that is its character and doesnt look right with anything but the original pop-up pods..The rear still looks classic with the round lights..Especially with two big fat exhaust's...Top draw Andy..

I'm going to bore a 55mm hole to the left and slightly below the inner light and drop in a Hella unit which I plan to counter sink into the body. It probably won't be as deep as the other lights but it will be round!GV said:

Hi Andy Should look very cool mate, did the fiat not have them built in to the indicator lamps mate?
Hi Andy
I presume you are doing something for the fog light as well!
Congratulation you have made the car look like a Ferrari rear end!
With all the other alterations you have done why didn't you just by a Ferrari?
I am sorry but if you don't like the look of the car why buy it and then change it!
If you don't like the way it handels why buy it buy a Scobie!
If you don't like the the way it performes why buy it buy a 450 or SEAC!
The more I read this forum the more its becoming a custom car forum!
There were either 2615 or 2627 wedges made thus making them a rare car!
How many are left proberly 1200 to 1400 or even less and of those how many are in fair original condition?
How many have now become customised?
The only good thing about it is the original or near to original car will allways be worth more and will sell better!
Yes most of us don't have our cars for monetary reason, but eventualy you will have to part with your pride and joys and if you keep it original you will get a better price or your family will when you pass a way etc!
Sorry if this is a moan but I like to preserve out motoring history rather than destroy it!

I did warn you...! Besides I'm not destroying my car only enhancing its appearance. It cost me £50 to do the mod as opposed to £150 plus for a new set of lights so I get a better looking rear end for less money. I presume you are doing something for the fog light as well!

Yeah I'm a for originaity, but also don't see a problem modding if you can easily convert back.
I was quite anal about my prevous MGBGT.
But I do love those round lights. Please let me know how you managed to do that for 50quid! Ha ha
I think when wedges are worth 15k plus, then I might be more for absolute originality.
But while good examples are languishing at 3 to 5k
All bets are off for me. I'm not including Seac of coarse, more your 350!

..Does look handsome that Adam...I think each to their own when it comes to enhancing the look of their beast's..I like the look of mine as is..And i know my engine has loads of bling but that can be put back to "Normal" if need be..Although i plan to keep her until i pass away..Then she is coming with me..An expensive coffin i know but hey ho!(Unless my young cousin's start making the effort to be more family orientated)..Cheers..Ziga GV said:
You're missing the point here Andy. Let's not turn this into a debate about originality otherwise someone may get embarrassed by it....!!
No AndyYou are missing the point!
The cars are now rare and you have defaced it!
You even did it to a rare car by trying to make it into a S2 when it would have been simpler and cheaper to just buy a S2.
That's my point.
If the cars not what you want when you buy it why buy it!
Buy the car you want!
