hi all,am looking for help (before i end up in a padded cell) i have just replaced pump on my power steering 96 serp, the new pump whines, not as bad as the previous pump ,but now whines when steering is in straight line, the steering itself is now light but feels a bit notchy, i have done all the bleed /purge stuff as is on the forum ,but no sign of air,and no leaks ,is it possible it is just a faulty pump? any help in this may save my sanity!!!

No leaks, its a new pump,so dont want to put anything through it, might have to go back for warranty.

Ah, I didnt realise that it was a new new pump. I've only ever really used that stuff to stop the whines of a tired system, it works well for that.

I was only asking because I used grey fluid and had similar issues to what you are describing. It also made the steering much lighter. I changed this and put in Halfords standard PSF fluid (red in colour) and the symptoms disappeared and the weight of the steering returned to normal.

To bleed the system, I topped up the reservoir and left it for an hour or so until the level dropped. I topped it up again, left the cap off the reservoir and jacked up the front of the car and spent several minutes moving the steering from lock to lock with the engine running. I also 'bumped' the steering a couple of times on each lock. Left the vehicle idling for ten minutes to keep the pump running. Switched the car off, took it off the stands and replaced the cap (but didn't over tighten) and went for a drive. Seems fine, although I have a slight weep on the U joint rolleyes

I put my initial issues down to the grey fluid being too thick, increasing the pressure of the system and not allowing all of the air to escape.

Its also worth checking the feed and return hoses for kinks/ flat spots where they route behind the dizzy etc.

thanks for input, did change the fluid to a different manufacturer,no difference ,have had a look at the routing of the hoses they look fine, the supplier has agreed to let me have another pump to see if it is the pump, let you know of the outcome.
