One of my mates' Mum is going to Canada next week and he wants her to bring back an Ipod of some description. He has asked me which one he should get, so I am asking you guys

My mum is going over to Canada next week and I wondered if you could give me an idea of what sort of I Pod I should get her to get me.

I don't know anything about them but want to get a normal one, I think, cos they can hold more than a mini. (that right?)

Do I need to have XP on my PC to down load songs or can I use Windows 2000. Not sure what I have got on my PC at home, it might even be 98.

Any thing else that I need to know.

Thanks for your help mate,

Greg

first off, as long as he has itunes he can use his computer with the ipod. Not sure if it is available for windows 98, might be.

Unless he has a massive library of thousands upon thousands of songs, he should go for a 15 or 20 gig one.

Also would only consider one of these if you have either USB 2.0 or firewire, neither of which Windows 98 support I don't think...

I once tried using USB 1.1 with my 3rd gen iPod and it was painfully slow (like uploading a song every 30 seconds) - not good for a library with (currently) 2100 songs in.

Got a laptop with XP and USB 2.0 and now it works like a dream.

iTunes (for Windows) is not compatable with Windows 98, 95, 3.11 or even NT. It need Windows 2000 or XP.

You need to nip down the shops and have a look at them both.

They're probably intended for different markets and/or modes of use.

To underscore this, I have one of both. When I'm travelling etc and want my full collection, I take my 3rd gen 30Gb iPod. I also use this at home now as a dukebox (the quality is great).

For going to and from work, jogging etc, I use a Mini. The form factor and weight differences are noticeable. And you can still get 90-100 albums on the little fella. (Many people suggested something even smaller, but they invariably don't hold enough decent quality ripped songs and don't seem too rugged).

Whatever you get, ask for a second set of headphones as the standard ones are pants. Sony MDR-EX71s are fantastic, can be had in white for that "ipod" look and should cost you no more than about 30-40USD. Welll worth the outlay.

the standard headphones are too large, and sound pants!

The iPod mini holds 4Gb of music, the Gen4 iPod holds 15,20 or 40Gb.

I have a Gen3 iPod, 15Gb and it's currently sitting full to the brim with 3000 or so songs on it, great quality and it goes to Uni with me most days.

You will need 2000 or XP to transfer the songs across and either firewire or USB2.0 to transfer the stuff across...

www.ipodlounge.com has huge forums on all manor of things iPod including rumours that a new iPod is to be released come Christmas.
