Hi,

I am trying to replace the rear nearside wheel bearing, but trying to work out to removal the rear brake shoes first? Do I need to slacken off the handbrake cable before trying to remove the shoes? What's the screw half way down the shoe for?

Any advice would be greatly received.

thanks,

Chris

There is a hole in the disk, with the shoe adjuster in, back the adjuster right of using a flat bladed screw driver then the disk should come off.

Thanks,

I think I need to wait until my 42mm socket arrives then start by undoing the big nut first. I thought I would do some prep work and get the shoes off first ready but seems I'm doing things in the wrong order?

So my 42mm socket arrived this lunch time and I have managed to get the nut off. The shaft shoves back so far but I would struggle to get into the rear three hex nuts to release the bearing. I can't get the handbrake brake shoe retaining screw out as it is partially obscured by the bearing flange. This is all new to me and the terminology may be wrong, but from what I can see there is the hub upright, with a round plate attached, and attached to this is the bearing. How do I get the bearing out, do I persevere and undo the three hex nuts at the back or is there another way.

Thanks

Chris

Cheers Peter I appreciate the photo,

Do I have remove the drive shaft from the bearing or diff(6 or 8 bolts?) so that I can get in with a hex socket? I can just get in with a long allen key but cannot get the torque on to release it. Plus I cannot fathom out how to get the handbrake cable out.

Thanks

You need to get the bit showing the arrow stamped into off before the handbrake cable can be passed through the hub, as for the bolts perhaps jack up the suspension so that it is sitting more level then you might be able to get an allen head in there, if you have adjustable coils then loose right off and jack up.

adjuster mentioned earlier

Thanks again Peter,

I'm going to carry on tomorrow, at least I know what I need to do now.

Can anyone let me know how the handbrake shoe retaining screw is attached. I can turn it and I can push it in, but it does not become unscrewed or released, I thought maybe by depressing and turning 90deg that it might pop out?

Once I get the screw out I can remove the shoes and then maybe figure out how the handbrake cable might be released to get the cable out of the rear.
Does the mechanism slide to one side and then out. I cannot really see how it is attached with the shoes still in place.

Thanks

Chris

The retaining clip in your first picture should push in and turn through 90 degrees and the pop out. If it is just turning then you probably haven't pushed it in far enough (or its broken).

...or the hole has corroded, making it now too small to withdraw!!
