Body Off Rebuild Started

Hi all

Started the body off rebuild today and got a bit of GOOD, removed the front end without snapping the bonnet brackets, some UGLY the front NS lighting connector has be replaced with individual bullet connections that all snapped and last the BAD – as you’ll see below the OS plywood bonnet frame has snapped just above the bracket fixing point. I’m thinking of fabricating two 2mm plates with a number of predrilled holes that can be bolted and glued in place to form a splint – sound plausible? Alternatively has anyone replaced this frame before and how difficult was it.

Any advice gladly accepted .

It would be easy enough to make a replacment, but how are they held in ? I see no problem with bracing it if its solid but how the hell did it snap ?

It looks as if someone’s had trouble aligning the bonnet horizontally and has snapped the plywood web in trying to pull it across – one bolt was fixed at the end of its thread while the other was fixed in the middle, uneven adjustment. The web appears to be fibreglassed in though there could be a secondary bracket beneath this.

Hi All
The ply is just glassed in. I removed mine when I started work on the bonnet. You should be able to remove it with a thin cutting disc.

nothing as fancy as a "secondary bracket" its held in by nothing more than the fibreglass you can see !


If you can get them out without disturbing the fibreglass one side or other that will act as a good location guide to re-bond some new ones in.
Get some proper marine/external ply from a proper timber yard.

I would guess it has had an impact to one corner, looks like the mountings are siezed up, I would remove the hinges, sand down the ply and do a full fiberglsaa repair covering the wood, It's a lot of work to remove the wood when it's easy to repair.

I'd agree with Alan - some 'parking by touch' probably. Fibreglass flexed plywood didn't do so well.
I'd leave that for now - concentrate on the main body off incase the budget starts running away.

I am about to sort out wiring to the new driving lights. Has your system worked out as you had hoped? I so I might well go the same way and try to get rid of some of the 'rats nest'!
