Le Phare du Cap Bon really is the shizzle - more aromatic than any of the other brands, and much hotter.

My first brush with harissa was on a school trip to Paris aged about 13.

We were allowed to buy baguettes containing merguez sausage, harissa and skinny chips, from a take-away stall outside the Sacré Coeur.

Fark it was hot.

It's stuck in my memory ever since, not to mention stumbling upon a couple shagging in a dark corner of the cathedral.

Now we've got the taste buds flowing I'll tell you about that couscous. The Royale featured, like, (easily) half a chicken, plus merguez and some primo lamb chops. To die for, and apparently unattainable in the UK for some unfathomable raisin.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm a massive fan of the Rose Harissa pictured - having taken several jars to various cities around the world when I have worked abroad. I've just come back from a week in Tunisia and the variety of harissa available was a bit overwhelming. I did buy a jar at the airport that was Berber style - whatever that means. Yet to try it, but may just head to Asda to add this to my collection.

So - what are people's favourite uses for Harissa?

I normally add a spoon to a Chili or to a tomato pasta sauce. But favourite has to be as a toping for Salmon fillet that is then baked in the oven until opaque. Mmmmm

Apart from the obvious addition to North African dishes, it works in any scenario where you'd use chilli sauce.

I like harissa so much I spread it on bread. It's also great mixed with mayo to dip chips in.

Works fantastically mixed with minced lamb and goats cheese which is then stuffed inside mini peppers, wrapped in foil and stuck on the BBQ for 15 mins.

Having a Tunisian Dad means I grew up on the stuff

The Harissa in yellow tubes you get in Supermarkets is crap in my opinion, its just like tomato puree with chilli in it, horrible stuff.

I normally get mine from an Arab food shop in France near where my Dad lives. Not sure what make it is but have a look later.

Ive also got some from a Tunisian supermarket from when I went on holiday there.

It's not the best but I wouldn't go that far!
Preference here is for a Harissa Djerbienne berbère.

A batch of "Merguez Kofte" is currently doing its thing in the fridge, ready to be BBQed later. Was only supposed to be a tablespoon of Harissa in, but it surely needed more than that !
