Live music on the radio

Is it just me or does live music really not work on the radio. It sounds terrible on the radio and not very good on the tv, but at least you can watch the stars perform on the tv.. I think live music on the radio is a massive failure and really doesn't work. I don't like how radio 1 2 & 4 were all at Glastonbury this weekend. Great coverage for the event, but sounds carp on the radio.

Have to agree. With well known bands people tend to get upset with 'live' anyway unless they are actually at the gig as inevitably the arrangement will be different.

My bugbear is the days afterwards where the live versions are played. As it's out of context with the original festival, plus it's sandwiched between recorded tracks, it just sounds weird. Absolute did it a lot after the Isle of Wight festival.

Live albums are the same, though obviously they usually get treatment afterwards so don't sounds too bad.

Glad you agree. I just to reiterate my point, radio 2 keep throwing in a random Glastonbury track during the day. As you say its thrown into the playlist with normally recorded tracks and it sounds all wrong! Someone must like it, otherwise they wouldn't play it surely?! Hmm that's actually how I feel about a lot of the music on the radio!

I totally agree with what you say about radio and TV, but don`t forget that some bands sound crap "real live" as well. Worst one I remember was Eric Clapton at the Royal Albert Hall. Is it down to Sound system, acoustics, production team or artist?

I do a Saturday morning breakfast show on a local radio station and do a 'Live at 9' slot where I play a live track to start the last hour of the show.

I can sit an listen to tracks at home on a Friday evening and think "that'll work" then come the next morning when it's playing out, I'm thinking "ooh, that's not right"

What's odd, is that it's a really popular segment on what is a standard local weekend breakfast type show. Two weeks ago, I gave Joe Bonamassa's Slow Gin live from the Albert Hall an airing and it went down a storm and it "worked".

It is an odd thing!
