Cayenne drive shaft advice please

Hi

Looking for some advice on my 2003 Cayenne - its now done 73k and i'm fairly sure it has a drive shaft failure or some sort (although its also due a major service, sparks and coils)

Thinking about it now the issues started with a high pitch squeal when driving on the last few occasions - which quickly converted to a thumping sound coming from beneath the car after my wife last drove it (which was also accompanied by a high pitch squeal coming from her...)

I've read a few other posts and it seems to indicate bearing or support failure on the drive shaft

So questions are
- should i pay for OPC to repair and replace whole DS?

- should i go recon drive shaft/bearing route and try DIY

- there is a replacement drive shaft support solution that doesnt require DS removal - will this work? i'm assuming not if its squeeled as it sounds like the bearing has gone (http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/pt376_1744_-cma81-cmo429/Porsche/Cayenne-MKII--957--4x4/Cardan-Shaft---Prop-Shaft/)

The shaft has to come apart to fit the bearing & diaphram so not option to fit in situ. Various people off the after market option. Zims in the US sell the bearing, there was an article in 911 & Porsche World about swapping it a few months ago.

i understand that you can get a kit for the toureg which is the same and can be done at any indy for much less than opc about 300 for the parts and labour

Thanks i think i've found a friendly Specialist that will fit the bearing £300inc labour instead of the whole thing c£800 plus labour from OPC

I've just gad the repair done proactively by gt1.

Certainly wouldn't bother replacing the whole thing.

Touareg can be done for £200-300 at many local props haft specialist Dealer wanted £1400+for new, Cayenne should be no different.

Mine was done under extended warranty by OPC, circa £1200 IIRC.

Hi,

Looking for some advice as about to pull my old garden shaft out this afternoon.

No prob with remove and refit, but still wondering what to do with it. You can buy bearings and the flexi pretty cheap, but have seen some write ups out of the US with parts being low quality/flimsy.

Can anyone recomend an outfit to sell the components, or provide recon/new pattern part.

Have seen this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORSCHE-CAYENNE-PROPSHAF... but is £400 quid.

Don't mind shelling out £ if required, but if I don't I won't since I am quite capable of doing the spannering myself.

Just had my propshaft done ........costs as follows..

Propshaft (OE Porsche) €808
Labour (2.52 Hours) €92
IVA (Tax) €207

So the total was €1107. I had no option for anything other than a complete propshaft as that is all that could be sourced here in Portugal.
2005 KN Turbo 104,000 Kms.
So maybe £400 in the UK is not so bad after all

Hi,I have just replaced two complete propshafts,due to centre support ripped out,aftermarket prop through two of my suppliers costs £350 plus Labour and VAT.

Resurrection.

To re-assure any potential owners this shaft thingy isn't a massive deal. Mine went last week and my little local garage fixed it for £275 all in including £20 to come and tow it from my house to their premises. Relived was the word.
