g sods law, had booked half day's leave tomorrow to get my car properly tuned on the dyno and this evening my fan belt snapped.
Doubtful I will have time to fit it tomorrow as working half day in the morning
I was also going to post a question about the correct fan belt part number but reading the wedge Bible it appears there are a few different set ups.
I have a 390 and the belt goes round the alternator pulley, the water pump pulley (are there 2 of them on the water pump, it is the pulley nearest the block anyway, I'm pretty sure it is the water pump ???) and another pulley ???
It has power steering too ?????

Calm down calm down!
It will be a standard SDi belt. Any motor factors can get one. They take 30 minutes to fit (MAXIMUM). Just slacken off the top alternator nut, cant over alternator, fit belt, tension and tighten up nut.
(I can do it in 10 minutes - as it needs doing when replacing the supercharger belt and I have done it on a lunchtime...)
Also tonight get a piece of string round the pulleys to measure the length (or the old belt will do) so you are prepared for the motor factors.

Ian is there any numbers on the old belt..The main one is the length of the belt..Something like 975 or 1025 or possibly larger?...if delilah is running up to temp with no leaks or overheating then i will give you a hand..What time are you looking at?..cheers..Ziga
Thank you very much Mark, please Delilah, be a good girl for daddy and Uncle Ian
But seriously mate if you are in any doubt about Delilah's running temp mate then don't chance it. The last thing I would want to happen is to upset Delilah all because of my F
G belt !!!Just measured the belt and it is approx 1102mm long. Hopefully I can source one in the morning after I have dropped Louis off to school. I'll be in from 9.30am onwards mate, thanks again mate and fingers crossed

Adam, thanks for your reply (and I'll try and take a photo now) but the belt has to go around the alternator (no problem there) and then around the inner pulley and then around a bottom pulley. I think it may be incorrect (someone else's bodge not mine honest). I will have to remove the belt that is on the outer pulley (nearest the front of the car and not the inner pulley nearest to the block to be able to put the new belt around the inner pulley first. Hope this makes sense, I'll go and try and take a photo........
Thanks chaps..........
I have changed both belts on a 400SE I used to have. The job can take up to a couple of hours if you've never done it before and haven't got the belts to hand. My ones hadn't snapped, they were just cracked in places and needed changing. On mine there were two belts. One for the power steering, the other for the alternator. You had to remove one before you could access the other. I did not have to remove the bonnet. The alternator belt is easy, just slacken off a couple of nuts and bolts. The power steering one is a bit of a pig to access and undo and then do up. When I removed both belts I took a trip to a Halfrauds superstore and took my old belts with me. There, I managed to match up both belts, but it took a while as a few millimetres makes a difference. Then, I returned to the car and fitted them. Job done.

Tony,
Thank you. I have the exact same set up.
I have got to replace the belt that goes around the inner water pump pulley, the flywheel and the alternator.
On my set up the other belt just goes around the outer water pump pulley and the power steering pulley.
To gain access to the inner pulley on the water pump I will have to take the outer pulley belt of the water pump off. How easy is it to move the power steering pulley ?
Kind Regards
Ian

Do you have the high-level or low-level PAS pump? The low-level one is easier, other than you have to get under the car to do it. The high-level one is a bit of a pain as there's not much 'swing' on the (TVR cobbled-together) bracket holding the pump to the front of the n/s cylinder head.Kind Regards
Ian
As an aside, my car threw its alternator belt (due to a missed gearchange) on the M1 en route to the 'Fest a few years back: with someone (Dixie?) holding the bonnet up it was a bum-nipping few minutes wrestling with the alternator whilst artics thundered past a few inches from my coccyx...

Ok. From memory, there are three bolts that hold the reservoir pulley in place. In theory one bolt has to be removed and the other two are for adjustment. I remember I had a bit of difficulty with these and ended up loosening all three to quite an extent before the pulley would shift enough to take the belt off. However, with a bit of effort and persuasion it is doable. In Halfrauds the belts are all out on display. Just go in there and start matching up. It may be an idea to look up the Rover SDI belts as this may save you time if they are the ones. This is something I didn't do and so it took me a long time to go through all the belts on the shelf. I got there in the end and found the correct sizes. I left them a bit of a mess in the shop, but what the hell, I'm a customer.

Yes, I removed the 3 bolts holding the power steering pulley. Nice and Easy
Ian..I hope you used some thread lock on those bolts when you put them back on..I changed a power steering pulley once and tightened it up as much as i could but it still wobbled loose after about a day...Just a thought mate..Normally you would just undo the tensioner and pivot...Ziga
Mark,Err.............what's thread lock ????????? Oops...........
......I'll get some and pit some on.
The power steering belt is separate and is 13mm in width.
My drive belt (goes around the flywheel, alternator and water pump on mine anyway) is 10mm width and the length was 1125mm. Hope this helps
