For those that have used Mobil 1 0w40 engine oil in their gearbox, can you tell me where to get the 'Moly' that is usually spoken of that is used as an additive in previous forums? I'm thinking of giving these a try in my '87 350i to replace the ATF.

I got mine on the flea but you can get the same stuff from most motor places - it comes in a purple and white bottle now - put half in and save rest for later (same with teh oil).

See the thread here for a piccy: [http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=12&t=1114393&i=40]Strange gearbox clutch problem V8 LT77[/url]

Im sure Adam will agree, makes a world of difference for selecting gears really smooth. Only thing it don't fix the syncrho on third thats worn as I was praying it wasn't lol. Definitely recommend it. I got the moly and mobil 1 off the flea.

Something I used for my LT77 in my Chimaera and it transformed the cold gearchange and stopped the tickover rumble too, was Difflock Synthetic Gear Oil.

I also used the Chim for Sprinting & Speed hillclimbs in the TVR Speed Champs and it never gave a moments problem in 5-years usage - still running perfectly - it was the later specced LT 77, but essentially the same as yours?

Unfortunately when I checked their Web-site is was being rebuilt, see here:

So you could phone them?

Highly recommended by other "early" Chim users??

Certainly can recommend the Mobil route. It has fixed:

a) general graunchiness - now much smoother
b) cold morning synchro defeat - down to -4C - no problems
c) box survived a clutch failure too

The last remaining test is the caning back from BBWF which (with previous oils) ended with the gear select becoming sticky when approaching home. So... we shall see in a few weeks time.

Yep - it's fixed that, too!

No more hot selection problems.
