What kit lens replacement?

If you like going wide on landscapes then see above.
If wide is not such a big thing (you can take 2 or more shots and stitch them for example) then the 24-105 gives the reach, is an "L" lens and can be picked up for around £550 on eBay regularly or around £500 fairly often if you have patience to wait. Which is about what I paid for mine 3 years ago. Think of it as more of an investment than an expense.

24-105 is good for stitching, but I do like my lenses a bit wider. Coupled with a 10-22 would be great.
I wouldn't disagree Rob but presumably the OP will be keeping the kit lens and the requirement is for extra length (... without having to fit the 70-300 was the way I interpreted that) so the immediate objective would be covered within the budget. Can't deny the 15-85 would do that too ...No idea which would be the better option but I just thought that pointing out the potential to meet the budget and satisfy the stated aim was worth mentioning.
Obviously the correct answer would be to buy both .... then decide.

Worth mentioning, I jumped on eBay after you're post and watched the first 23-105L I saw. Just ended for £443 plus £12 P&P. Will be getting one of those within the next year if they continue to sell at that price.No idea which would be the better option but I just thought that pointing out the potential to meet the budget and satisfy the stated aim was worth mentioning.

You should ave added £5, bought the thing and said nothing .... or taken the stick and got it over with. Now you will suffer months of friction before you buy and will still get stick at the end.
Oh well. Just keep pointing out that at that sort of price it is still a good investment.
Alternatively point to the new 200-400 with the in-built extender and tell her that is what you really need. But the 24-105L might suffice instead. £500 for the smaller lens might start to sound like cash back with no up front payment ...

It does make a lot of difference what you want it for, but as I said the Tamron is my default lens. I like wide apertures, I'm not a big fan of IS, and for portrait/family and indoor use it's perfect for me. Looking at your budget and your other lenses, maybe it'd be right for you too. Tamron 28-75 f2.8 £355 on Amazon, vs Canon 15-85 f3.5-5.6 IS at £550.
