Just very quietly.....

That's the noise I'm getting from a new hard drive.
Done some Googling and it seems it's fairly common, I just wondered if anyone knew the reason for it.

Drive is a 80GB Excelstor, but other manufacturers seem to have the same problem (if it is a problem!).

Don't know if this is your noise, but most drives, especially SCSI ones carry out a regular thermal recalibration.

When the drive warms up, the platters expand, and their geometry changes, thus making recalibration necessary.

When this happens you can get the noise you describe. I have a Fujitsu SCSI which does not make the noise and 2 IBM SCSI's which do.

Yes but they still do thermal recalibration. It's just that SCSI runs hotter so maybe they do it a bit more.

Thanks, I thought it might be some kind of regular check it does on itself. Not too worried, just thought somebody might know.
