What's the best endurance series?
Discussion
Good evening
I'm looking to get a good amount of seat time in preparation of doing some serious endurance racing. What choices do I have of club endurance racing? I have seen that Lotus has a 6 hour on and the BTCC Silverstone 24 hour, anything else a little more regular?
Ideally tin tops, looking to do some sports car racing in 2014.
Cheers

360 motor racing club do a good value annual 6 hour race - this year at Donington on 3/4 August. Real club level.
Britcar is an obvious series, look on their website sites but no 24 hr race this year.
Various UK teams offer hire seats in VLN at the Nurburgring or even Dubai and Barcelona 24 hr races.
3 clubs offer club series with 40-45 min races, but not really endurance!
Theres the "Fun Cup" series for vw beetle clones, again look at the fun cup Web sites and then there's the Endurance series of the Sports 2000 club - 1 hour races for Ford duratec and ford Pinto engined sports prototypes.
On the Continent you get the V de V series.

Thanks Andy.
A couple there I hadn't heard of. Seems a little difficult, doesn't it? Why no Silverstone this year?
I guess a strategy could be to line a drive up in the few big races this yr and then figure out how to fill in the rest of the time.
Im still annoyed there's no britcar24 this year! hopefully next year A couple there I hadn't heard of. Seems a little difficult, doesn't it? Why no Silverstone this year?

JPR do arrive and drive for Funcup, they also do test days if you want to try them out on www.funcup.co.uk, aside from the shape they don't have a lot in common with beatles, they're more like gokarts with sequential gearboxes mated upto 1.8t vw engines.
Seat time on races is a lot, 4-6hr races split up with 3 drivers plus a long quali and of course any test days.

Hadn't considered fun cup - that sounds like it might be an answer. Anyone taken the opportunity to drive one of those things? More like an open wheeler?
Fun Cup is like a big kart. Its easy to drive but getting the most out of one is challenging - they don't have a lot of power so its all about keeping momentum high, slip streaming and so on. They move around quite a bit on the treaded road tyres and there is a fair amount of movement in the suspension bushes etc. You can get them ridiculously sideways and recover them (though clearly that's not the quickest way to proceed). Overall they are genuinely great fun to drive. Racing is very, very competitive - make a small mistake and you lose 3 places. You do more overtaking in an hour stint in Fun Cup than pretty much anything else, and the font cars are often only a few seconds apart after 5 hours of racing.
Its one of those things that looks a bit dull as an onlooker (as speeds are not that high), but is seriously good fun to race in.
Caught a race on TV yesterday, they look like a lot of fun. And the increased seat time makes it look really appealing.
What's the go with the cars themselves? Is there much to be had from car to car? Can you get something that was raced in previous series, or do you really need to get in to something new to be competitive?

The race numbers on the cars tell you how old they are - they are effectively chassis numbers (apart from No 1 which is last year's championship winner). The higher the number, the newer the car.
Not much difference between old and new - its in the prep and how its pedalled. And with the prep, the suspension isn't adjustable - you can change ride height, spring rate (soft, med, hard), camber and toe and that's it. You can mess about with shaved tyres and even shave some camber into the tyres - and the tyres last and last...
The cars are very solid - chassis is very substantial, and as you sit in the centre so you feel pretty safe.
The problem is trying to find a car - there are very few petrol engined cars available for sale in the UK. We bought ours from Germany and had to add the sequential box, UK spec exhaust and a few other bits and pieces to comply with the UK regs. You can rent seats in cars run by the organisers, JPR
