Hello chaps, I've been running a thread on one of the Porsche forums about rally prepping my old 944 but thought I'd add one here.

I bought this old 944 last summer as a bit of a snotter run about after my Range Rover exploded and was off the road for a month. After a few hundred miles with it I was head over heels in love - such great balance and turn in.

I spend most of my spare time and cash classic rallying - a few years ago I built a Group 2 Citroen DS rally car and really enjoyed the process of getting my hands dirty after having spent years pottering around in offices. So I've now decided to retask the 944 for other duties.

It all started last year when the charity I work with (www.missionmotorsport.org) were after something interesting for their lads to get into. I thought classic rallying would be good fun for them so after a bit of a chat I entered the HERO Throckmorton Challenge with a chap called Nathan. He was absolutely top class with the maps and, on his first time out, stuck us on the podium.

We enjoyed it so much that we've decided to give it a bit more of a go this season so we're entered into 2 very tough rallies at the end of the year.

The 944 stodd up to a good beasting on the rally above but I decided if we're going to do it right then we'd better do it right. So, like every sensible chap I am going full Class 3 rally spec with the car.

It has been completely stripped back inside now, at the last count it has dropped by 92kg. When the new lexan windows and GRP bonnet go on it should be well over a 100kg saving.

However, like every true PHer I'm having fun shopping online for rally 'essentials'. Thus I'll be killing the aero but multiplying the cool by 100 with the addition of a bespoke hand made lamp pod for the front.

I also got a superb deal from the dudes at Cobra seats on a nice pair of Imola Pro GT seats.

The braking system has already been well sorted with uprated disks, hoses, pads and calipers but the suspension is a little tired. So this week I'm expecting a delivery of a full Koni Yellow front and rear shocks plus new springs. That should sharpen it up a bit. I'm also going for an entire set of horribly expensive Powerflex polybushes so the car will be a little bit gnarly once all that has gone on.

Next step is the harness bar and a little treat from our friends at Tuthill - a roof airvent. Can't wait to get that little rascal on the car.

That's about it for now. I'm in the process of stripping out all of the glue and st from the footwells at the moment so its time for me to get back to my head gun and scraper. This is how it looked as of an hour ago. Still a long way to go...

And this is how it should look (but in black) in about 20 days.

Good man, great charity. For anyone who hasn't heard of them, worth checking out.

Didn't you spend a weekend de-foaming the bonnet not too long ago? Sounds like my way of doing things.

Keep the updates coming thumbup

You observant rascal!

Yes, got an offer of a black GRP bonnet for not a lot so decided to go for it.
