CAMERAS WILL CUT DEATHS

More speed cameras should be installed on Britain's roads to cut the number of children being killed, according to a report.

The research shows 268 youngsters are killed or injured on the roads every month - and children in deprived areas are more at risk.

The study, by Barnardos and Transport 2000, said many children believe speeding, selfish driving and busy roads are stopping them from playing in their neighbourhoods.

And children from the poorest homes, who have less adequate play facilities and are more exposed to traffic, are five times more likely to be injured.

The report is being launched by actress Jenny Agutter and calls for urgent Government and local authority action to help lessen the dangers.

Ms Agutter said: "Even though roads are busy, children still want to use them to go to places and they want to do this safely. At present this is not possible. Therefore, the challenge to Government and to local authorities is to make roads safe for children."

Concluding the report, Barnardo's and Transport 2000 are calling for speed cameras to be installed in deprived areas where there are large numbers of child pedestrians.

They also want 20mph speed limits in residential areas and near schools, with a commitment to driver education.

The deprived areas they talk about are where the parents allow there kids to run around using the roads as a playground. These are usually in ethnic minority areas.
Not even basic road safety is taught to them.
Another reason they are allowed to do this is so they can claim on the unfortunate motorists insurance.

Why not put everyone use the roads, so that we can drive on the pavements

The problem is they won't stick the cameras on side-roads in "difficult" housing estates...

It'll be on A roads where they can catch people.

People with insurance, a real traceable number plate, road tax, a driving licence and a bank account with enough money in it to cover the fine!

Ah well. Ms Agutter's charms have eroded somewhat since "Logan's Run" so I doubt anyone will pay any attention...

My God, thirty years of the deepest admiration for an actress wiped out in a second.
How can anyone so obviously intelligent and gifted be so blind.
Does anyone know her e-mail address or a website I can contact her through?; she needs to be shown the real statistics befor she does any further damage.

Ms Agutter, the actress. Hmm. I didn't see 'Ms. Agutter, the road safety expert' there.

So what exactly is her qualification to pronounce on the issue, other than thinkofthechildren?

Edited to add: American werewolf. Mmmm.

I think she would consider her relationship to this is justified through two versions of "The Railway Children" that she filmed.
Mind you I seem to remember her running out in front of a 400 ton locomotive in the first one.
Hmmmm??!!

Couple of years ago Leeds council produced a map showing where most of the Child injuries and deaths occured. Harehills and Armley were very high. Those areas have a very high population of certain ethnic groups.

Soon there'll be so many speed cameras around, that we wont be watching for children, just the cameras, and then we'll run them over because we were too busy watching out for cameras, but you'll be alright, because you were doing the speed limit

well put, totally agree

Maybe they should focus on this (factual?) correlation, then they could cut child death by 80% at a stroke, as well as reducing crime and general anti-socialness resulting from bored children!

Oh bloody hell, not Jenny Agutter as well?

I've never fully recovered from that scene in 'American Werewolf' where the supreme English Rose subtley displays her ample charms.

The fact that such a quality filly could indulge in such arse-ended communism is an absolute shocker.

I have a bit of a problem with these well known personalities coming out with various pronouncements and being given great publicity as if they are a credible authority.

Emotional claptrap is no help in solving real problems whether it emanates from a supposed 'celebrity' or anyone else.

Best wishes all,
Dave.
