Garmin Edge 500 Problem

I was on a 52 mile Sportive the other week and my Garmin decided to stop counting the miles at 32 miles! It also stopped registering the mph!

Has anyone else experienced this and know what the problem might be?

Do you have the speed/cadence sensor? If that moves away from the magnet, then it'll stop registering.
Other than that, not sure.

The magnet isnt on at the moment as the thing that holds it on to the spokes broke. However its the GPS that gives you your speed/distance. Perhaps it lost contact with the satilites.

The magnet didn't fall off at 32 miles by any chance did it?

If you have a speed/cadence sensor detected by the 500, it will use that for speed/distance readings in preference to GPS.
I *think* It will only revert to GPS for the readings if it can't find a S/C sensor.

If your sensor is present but not getting an input (i.e. no magnet) then speed/distance won't display/update on the screen.

Interestingly I had an issue with my 800 this morning on the way to work, it just stopped reading movement for just over a mile. average speed went down, current speed was zero, heart rate and cadence were still being registered, then it just started again with no intervention.

Sounds like it lost GPS signal

My Cadence sensor hasnt been fitted for a while and its worked previously, indeed it worked for the first 32 miles of my sportive.

The same happened to my Garmin 800. If you complete a hard reset (google it), it should fix it ok. I followed the instructions and it's been perfect since.

My speed sensor is turned away from the magnet but every now and then the garmin remembers it's there and it'll stop logging speed I need to purchase a cadence only sensor at some point as the gps only is far better. My theory is that a jolt will make the cadence sensor think it has picked up the magnet and wakes up I'll remember to unpair it at some point

Did it auto-pause?

Mine keeps bloody doing it. I updated the firmware, reset it, deleted all the old files and it seemed to be good.

Until last week when it started again. It's intermittent though so is a pain.

Garmin will replace it for £67.50.

Or I might just grab a new 510 from Handtec for £203...

Thank you everyone for your help. Im out on my bike on Sunday for a 35 mile ride so Ill see what happens then. If its still playing up then Ill try the reset.

If you reset it, you can copy the .fit files to you PC first and then then add them back after the reset so you won't lose user data/bike settings etc.
