Don't pay for courtesy cars

After dropping my Cerb off to a dealer for a service, it was suggested I purchase a new sump. "No problem, how much?"
When we get an answer back from TVR, we'll call you, 4 days later, no answer & I've got a 99 VW polo costing me £14 a day,
I've told them I don't want to wait for the phone call any longer & as my sump's not useable I've organised a low loader to collect it.
£435 bill from them (Includes the courtesy car, )
£190 low loader
£56 Fuel
£681 total.
& I'm back to the same position I was two weeks ago, still requiring a service & a replacement sump.
Roll on the scoring web site for dealers, I'll stick to my Indie in future, I thought I'd pay the extra for the main dealer stamp, never again.
Am I being impatient waiting 4 days for a price, or is this the norm ?

thanks Baz, I've ordered one from Douglas valley, mine's the old style pre 98. They make you pay for a courtesy car??? 
Surely they are giving you a hire car if they charge you for it?
I hope they are minimum £14per hour cheaper than elsewhere - I think if my friendly bunch decided to charge me on top of the hourly rate I'd be off looking for a new service department!

How can they charge you £435 if they haven't carried out a service?

For the bits of the service they did prior to finding out the sump needed replacing, visual check of car & replace a rear light bulb & given list of what needs doing £129
Remove wheels & clean brakes, refit wheels £129
Brake pad springs & caliper pins £22
"courtesy" car for 11 days £155
In all fairness, they've now rang with a good price (cheaper than I can get it done) to replace the sump.
I've already booked the recovery & service elsewhere though.

The factory was my preferred choice, three phone calls to them, 6 weeks ago & I still havn't had a phone call back.
Choice number two, the place that makes the engines, sent them two faxes, six weeks ago, still waiting...
Choice, number three, immediately booked in for service, excellent, work needs requiring, 6 days for a quote with a £14 a day courtesy car, if it weren't for the fact I'm picking the car up, that six days could have been longer, as this doesn't appear to be an isolated incident.
I no from reading on here, that all of the above have hundred's of satisfied customers, I fall into the .1% unfortunately.
My sister, settles insurance claims with the repairers & frequently has "ABC" car repair's take ten weeks to replace a headlight, while "ABC" car hire next door (owned by the same person) hire's them a car for ten weeks at £50 a day.
Can't beleive I fell for it myself.
If I save any of you out there, one penny, my £700 wasted wont hurt quite as much.

Gosh I am suprised that the service from the dealer is poor, I thought people had nothing but praise for that dealer.

My dealer only charges for courtesy cars if they need to cover the insurance, normally i just put the c/car on the tvr insurance with no problem. This was due to the insurers insisting on this after 2 courtesy cars were written off by customers. There is still no charge for the car (although the car is usually only a vauxhall or Smart. This i can cope with as c/cars cost money to run and maintain and appreciate that this is provided foc
