Cost of a ground up restoration
Discussion
I think it would vary considerably depending if you were to do it all yorself or pay other people to do it..
I had a quote from RT to lift the body..Check..Repair and powder coat the chassis for around 5K...This included re-fitting all new bushes that i supplied...(£200)...Powder coating wishbones..Trailing arms..Diff carrier and any other bits i could throw in there..It was another 1.5K to have the suspension upgraded..£500 for a Diff overhaul..£450 for a gearbox rebuild...Exchanged rebuilt rear calipers from ward engineering..£130...Interior..2-2.5K that included the targa and replacement hood..Wheels..£250 upwards...Paint..Dependant on what you want 1K-5K...So in excess of 10K..And that without the electrics being touched or any re-veneering of woodwork!...You could probably cut that bill in half, Maybe more if you could do most of it yourself..Ziga

I was just taking stock of my Wedge ...
Want to change the paintwork from mica blue to something like Candy Bentley Blue

But I guess if Im going for a respray, then it would make sense to take the body off completely ... and while its off, maybe get the chassis fettled, do the brakes / dampers & springs, bushes, seals etc.
Mechanically, my Wedge is sound, the new Engine has less than 4000 miles on it since it was replaced, everything works, and the interior was done 8 years ago (carpets, seats, Hood etc).
Wheels are in good condition, but im tempted to get them refurbished (might speak to Paul Holland because I know he did his himself.
Might throw a pair of stainless manifolds into the equation too but thats about it

Only trouble is you will get what I call the 'Nacnud syndrome', ie. whilst I have the body off I might as well change the brake lines, fuel lines, swirl pot, calipers, fuel tanks, rear discs, diff, UJ's, engine mounts etc etc etc. Then its costs a fortune.
....then shortly after you sell the car.
My theory has proven to be true time and time again! ;-)

Hi Just seen this post and ref the SEAC as mike says is a very good example. Restored by its owner over a number of year and he then sold it with in 6 mths of it being finished.
Now the price to do a full nut and bolt rebuild, using out side people for somethings like paint work and diff a gearbox rebuilds is betwwen 10 to 13K
Back to the SEAC its at last at its true value now £19950.
Please somebody buy it its to good to miss!

Ahh No, all those have already been done (except the fuel tanks & engine mounts). Plus having owned the car for the past 15 years, I dont think I could bring myself to sell it.....then shortly after you sell the car.

There is no doubt that totally rebuilding a V8 Wedge is very costly and runs into many thousands of pounds, and, that's not even accounting for the many man hours put in by the owner. There are however a number of things that worries me about buying such a car. Especially one that has been rebuilt and sold on a short while after, as in the case of the red SEAC on sale at present. I would be much happier buying a car that was rebuilt by someone qualified to do the job properly. I have no way of knowing if the owner carried this job out to a good standard. It's like taking my car to a backstreet mechanic for a major overhaul, without knowing the level of their qualifications or skill. In any case, my view on all SEAC's is that they are overpriced anyway, based on it's rarity. This may be so, but it doesn't represent value for money, as I feel I am not getting that much more. Talking about rebuilt Wedges in general, buying one that had been totally rebuilt would be a dream come true, but, it would have to be one rebuilt by a reputable firm and by someone that know what they are doing. Let's face it. Such a rebuilt Wedge wouldn't be cheap, but at least my mind would be at rest knowing that it had been properly rebuilt.
This of course is just my opinion and is not intended to cause offence to those who may have built their cars at home.
