Right forum, dilemma time:
I got into cycling a year ago, loved it since. In jan, i impulse bought a roadie on wiggle because it was on offer, and it had utegra. It's a gt gtr1, large, and i'm 6 foot.
Despite trying everything, i keep getting sore knees (centre front, bottom of kneecap), and think it's because the bike s too small - i'm as up and back as i can get, on a layback post i got of fleabay.
The gt was always an "if i don't like road biking, i at east won't lo much" purchase, so i'm looking at upgrading, preferably to something that fits. I've popped in to the LBS that was actually helpful ast year (most just wanted my cycle to work voucher and od the rest), and they are suggesting a focs cayo evo, and they'll swap any bits to mke it fit. I like the shop, and they're either great salesmen, or genuinely care. Or both.
However, part of me thinks tht if i ought te right size frame, i coud get something pretty damn sexy from e.g canyon for te budget (sub. 2k, whateve i get i can't perform to match it). I like carbon, because it looks cooll, but that is the only real reason. Likewise, i've been lusting after a cube agree, purly because of the looks.
So forum, if you had 1-2k to throw at a hobby you spend increasingly daft amounts of tme doing, what woud you buy? There needs to be some bling factor, because it's coming alongside the move from pride and joy back to frugal diesel...

Oh i know that. I'm not wanting to buy faster, but more comfortable. The bling is purely because i would like to ride it. No different to driving a car because you like it more than another that does the same job, but with less enjoyment.
Btw - large in gt is a 53cm frame, according to the sticker on the bike. I've bought a longer, layback seat post, and it's fully back.
I guess i'll now go to the lbs for a fit, see where it leads me, i guess. I had been hoping PH would egg me on to get something shiny, but it was not to be

Get comfortable then go mad and buy something shiny.
Frame sizing is a funny thing since the compact frame designs came along, some companies quote the actual so on a compact frame they sound too small, whereas other companies like felt, quote them as 56's but they aren't, they are based on the effective top tube of the average 56 frame.

Thamks for the tips guys
I'll see if i can do it before the manchester-blackpool-manchester in 2 weeks - last 200k ride i did, i could hardly walk for 2 days after - it was the commitment to doing it / realisation that it'll hurt that prompted the trip to the emporium of shiny goodness...

I'd get a bike fit if I were you. If you're in or near Manchester then this guy comes highly recommended http://pedalprecision.com/
The £60 fit should do the job.

Go and get a fit. What's the point of riding a 3 grand bike if you cannot do more than 30 miles before you're in pain. None.
Frame material is irrelevant, a well fitting Alu bike will be a better investment than a badly fitting 'carbon' bike - btw, replace the word carbon with plastic and tell me if it is still as attractive!?!?!?!?!?I have 6 x bikes all with varying frame sizes but setup to my geo fitting, which means differing stem sizes, seat heights, etc - they are all a pleasure to ride - some more brutal than others, but this is down to frame construction rather than the setup.
I would strongly recommend a fitting before you consider spending too much money on bikes etc.
Your description of the pain (centre front, bottom of the knee cap), leads to suspecting the patella tendon.

See the links above for likely cause, however unlikely due to being normally associated with jumping. Unless you are doing some other relevant sport.
Does the pain stop when you have finished cycling or hurt afterwards? If so how long? Maybe go see a physiotherapist as you may have an issue where the cycling is aggravating an injury and a bit of rest is what's required in combination with getting the geometry sorted.
If you sort the bike out but continue cycling your may well continue getting the pain. All in my opinion as someone with wrecked knees. Speaking to a specialist physiotherapist would be money well spent (probably better than a new ride).

Sorry for the Hijack but it saves me starting a new thread.
I'm starting to get lower back pain when cycling, normally starts to get sore around 10miles in.
Is it recommended to get a fit, a very keen and knowledgable cycling friend did a very un scientific fit for me. If so where is best in the Surrey Area for this.
I think I'd like to make sure everything is bang on. It can become quite an issue on rides over 30 miles..
