Claiming back mileage differential - quirky question

Quick one - maybe.

The other half is looking at a part-time job, mostly for something to do. Job looks like fun, and won't hurt the CV.

The job involves pootling around in her car from place to place, but the only quibble is the mileage rate payable is 15 pence per mile. Quick calculation says that the shed runs at 14.8 ppm. M'kay...

When I have claimed the difference back from HMRC, I get it as a tax free addition to my code. She doesn't earn enough to actually pay tax, so what happens then? Direct refund, or an odd situation where her tax free threshold goes up, even if she doesn't reach it?

You can't get tax relief when you aren't paying any tax - sadly.

Does your 14.8ppm include possible increased insurance costs for business use, wear and tear, extra depreciation for increased mileage?

14.8ppm is rubbish for using her own car, should be looking closer to 45ppm. Explain that to them and see if they will budge.

Nope, not Class 2 business, tax, tyres or any of the above. And that's on a poxy Fiesta, rather than the Volvo.

Best of all, the chap who interviewed her seemed to think it acceptable to disclose he was only paid 30p per mile.

I'm not going to name and shame, but I suspect the level of job is leading the company down a high churn, low value route, simply because they can in this climate. Ho hum.
