I guess this is a Chim thing but I just want to check.

I was getting some speed up on the M5 today, circa 120 (kph of course!) and the rear lip of the near side of the bonnet was tap, tap, tap all the time. The bonnet catch is on the offside so is secured down but nothing on the near side which is why it was flapping up and down.

Is this normal?

Thanks.

Look under the front of your car. Is there a forward facing chin spoiler? They usually get wiped off.
You can buy a replacement from Power for under £40. It changes the airflow under the bonnet, helps with cooling and sucks the bonnet down. Mine used to flap like mad at any speed over 70mph, and I even had the bonnet pop open at 135 mph. Not a quiver since I replaced the chin spoiler.

Yes It's normal, though there are a few things you can do to minimise/eliminate it:-

- adjust the plastic cam halfway up the bonnet shut line, one on each side
- Is the splitter missing? If yes, get one fitted, this helps the airflow around the bonnet and aids cooling
- fit a grommet into the mesh so that the tip of the bonnet rests on it and takes up some of the play in the bonnet

Is the splitter just a bolt on jobbie or something else?

If you cannot find one, a local engineering co will make you one. Stainless steel, thick enough to be stiff, 900mm long by 75 mm wide, then get them to put a 45 degree bend along the whole 900 mm of it, in the centre of the steel. Screw it under the front of the car about a foot back fom the front (you will see the old screw holes), with the loose edge pointing downwards and forwards

Yes, it just screws on, under the car, about a foot back from the front of the car.

Is this what I need? £18 plus the vat man seems a cheap fix if it is.

+1 that's it. Amazing that something so minor can make such a difference.
