Online Gallery Software?
Discussion
Hi Guys,
Im looking at the best way to add Gallery functionality to my website. This one works well:
www.evoposters.net/carsa/
but it needs to be installed on your own server, and the hosting I use doesn't include support for this kind of thing. What im looking for is either:
a)Software that is hosted on a 3rd party site, that I can configure to match up with my current site branding, and that doesnt include any (or not too intrusive) advertising. It also needs to be free or at least very cheap.
b)Software that I host on my own site, but is simple to install, free, and doesnt require too many complex things to be loaded on the server - I have PHP but not sure what else.
Any ideas chaps?
Dave

I've been playing about with :-
Coppermine - http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/
Gallery - http://gallery.menalto.com/
4Images - www.4homepages.de/
But then my host uses Fantasico, which installs them for you.
I've hardly used it but this is my Coppermine based gallery - http://mercia.biz/gallery/
But I'd also recommend the Free Album Generator mentioned below (as I missed the bit about not being able to be hosted on your server
)

There are plenty of third party gallery products, it just depends what level of access you have to your hosting... some of them require MySQL, and some will require some config and chmoding.
www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=free+php+gallery&meta=
should help.
Alternativly, just click the sponsorship link in the top right, and buy hosting that comes with Free Gallery software, and the freedom to install your own stuff.

</plug>www.stefancarlton.net use php written by me
Means you can adjust to your hearts content... Uses a mySQL backend & comes with a "admin" section (read a page I wrote to dump stuff to the db).
You are welcome to it - it reads "header.php" which can be any darned layout you desire...

Thanks guys, ill check them out.
re Thumbnail programs - I have one of those, but its not really very configurable to make it blend in. Also, it still means putting in a bit of work - rather than just simply uploading from wherever I happen to be!
What id REALLY like is a database like the ones that Image Libraries use - so people can do a search for images and see thumbnails of all those that match their requirements. I think this will prove tricky and expensive though!

Oooh, what would I need to install that? And how would I go about it? Does your software have the facility to login and upload from anywhere, or do I just have to upload images to a folder and it does the rest?
Thanks for the offer mate - I may well take you up on it

The ones our VDSs use is http://gallery.sourceforge.net/
It has search capability for Albums, showing matching albums and Album Image in the results.
Its freely downloadable, give it a look.

Sorry forget about this thread
I looked into the whole "upload from anywhere" but what I saw meant you'd have to do it one file at a time which would be no use at all. So the concession I made was upload both the thumbnails and the images (made in irfanview) to a folder and then run an admin script, tell it the folders, give it a folder and it then allows you to adjust if it's a favourite (something I need to fiddle with as I removed the viewing stuff) and add a comment.
All you need to install it is a PHP server (getting standard now) and a mySQL server for it to talk to - it surprised me that this wasn't a free option on most accounts (Jamie's Register1.net does on both accounts tho
). All it needs then are two tables, files and albums, it should do the rest itself. Don't be fooled, the admin isn't that pretty (it works for me) and the code was getting improved fairly regulary as I wanted to improve something (i.e. add the previous next buttons) and it has a dirty rotten hack in it
which makes it work but needs to be fixed. I actually wrote the core bits back in Easter last year to learn PHP and it's been improved since (re-written in Easter when I moved to a proper server). Whenever a holiday from Uni comes I add to it, improving little bits here and there and as such if you leave the php file as it is, when ever I update it I would send the new version through so that it will replace the original and give you the new options. the file is pictures.php and it is a self contained album description table, thumbnail table and picture generator. all you need to do is include it where ever you want to put it in your page (i.e on mine I have one cell which changes). With all been method driven, it wouldn't be impossible for you to change some aspects if you didn't like it as well
Do you know PHP at all? Email me if you want a look at it.
