How much annual car tax.....
Discussion
Sorry to reopen an old thread but it seems the most efficient approach.
I'm a bike trackdayer but after knackering my shoulder in a big off I'm considering a switch to Caterhams.
I thought that cars built after 2001 were taxed according to emissions, but every Caterham I've looked up seems to be £225 a year. Is that right or are some of the later ones cheaper to tax?
Cheers,
James.

The discussion above is for car tax (more properly called Vehicle Excise Duty) which is an annual charge set bey the government to allow you to have a vehicle on the road. The cost normally depends on the emissions of the vehicle, going from £0 for vehicles emitting less than 99g of CO2, rising to a top band of £490 for emissions over 255g/Km. the cost is even higher in the first year.
Caterham's, because the car does not have Type Approval like the bigger manufacturers, is taxed as a Private Light Goods vehicle (think white. Vans) where there are only two charges, based on engine size (above or below 1549cc). It saves having to emissions test individual vehicles.
Insurance charges are set by insurance companies and the cost will depend on the car's performance, value, age of driver, postcode, accident history of the driver and accident ciosts of the car (likelihood of accident x cost of repair/claim) - as well as other factors such as colour! Premiums can vary from as low as £100pa to well over £1000. Caterham's probably average around £200, with most in the £150-£250 range.
