Jack, I want to go up in the world quickly and safely
Discussion
Fed up with my jack (new rubbish), no good. Lots to see out there, anyone have something like this?

Need to get at these tanks and other stuff, need the space and fed up of @rsing around with next to no garage space for the trolly jack lever. I am guessing I can also use these to lift the car onto stands? Last time I tried my car ramps they nearly shot off through the wall.

Hi Nigel, remember you talking about them now. Bit busy at the moment but might take you up on that at some point for a show and tell.
But if I can ask, could you use them to place axle stands? Thinking for example I need my tanks out and the wheels will be in the way, looks like it should not be a problem and I could get them higher than a jack.
Been looking at some fancy alloy jack for a 100 notes but I do not always need the wheels off and this way seems safer and easier. Especially with next to no room for the jack handle.

Jeff - get some carpet down in your garage.
But I have just painted the floor, don't want to hide that colour .......
Never happy on my ramps either (when I eventually get on them), always hanging over a side, these jackable doohickeys seem the ticket in the cramped garage.
If you get a couple of bits of wood a few inches thick and only has to be 6 inches by 9 but could be bigger, what you do is push the car forward, place behind the wheels then drive the car onto them.
After that you can use any standard jack under the chassis - just an inch or two higher makes all the difference. Simples!

Hmm. See I am not thinking outside the box enough. Still have an issue with space available and that means storage as well as working space. Couple of carpet tiles for the ramp but I do like those jackable things.
Tony, my drive is a lot steeper into the garage and I had a cunning plan to have a drive on thingy into the garage. Problem is with long term stuff, insurance says car kept in garage. These tanks will take a while to get sorted.
Looks like it is a two pronged attack, at the end of which I will probabley get rid of the two jacks I have now. One jackable ramp and a decent jack, I see your point over the sledge hammer cracking walnuts Nigel.
Getting deja vu here. Must be narked that something I could do myself is being scuppered by access again and needs the garage. Bite the bullet man and do it!

We use a Blue Point hydraulic jack which gets under the wedge no problem and tend to take off the handle extension then put the stands under, once you got it you got it for ever, think it was about £130 ish. Dunno how many sheep that is, John.
If I may ask what that jack is like to use. Mine takes a lot of effort and is not as low as I thought. Google it later for more info.Getting deja vu here. Must be narked that something I could do myself is being scuppered by access again and needs the garage. Bite the bullet man and do it!

Did you build the house after driving the Wedge up the ramps?
No, but having a house on a steep hill does have it's advantages. The run up to the garage entrance is even steeper. A couple of blocks under the end of the thick planks provides amazing access to the underneath of car.The only disadvantage of living on a steep hill is when you put your screw driver down, then turn around to pick it up a few minutes later, it's gone. Usually into the middle of the road.

Wyn, did you find Tony's screwdriver in Wales???
That's some hill!!
Sort of on the same subject but as I'm getting older and more knackered I'm starting to think about some sort of car lift. To make life easy when working underneath.
What is there (that's safe) that will fit into a standard garage space?
I may consider raising the roof a few feet for extra clearance.

I have enough room and height in my garage for a four poster(lift not bed), but they are expensive. Second hand ones are dirt cheap but I don't have the confidence to fit one as I've never done it before. The advantage would be to keep two cars in a single garage and be able to work on the one above. Park my BM underneath and the Wedge above. Hows about that then? That's some hill!!

Oh, and Wyn, if you find that screw driver of mine in Wales, bring it to the Fest will you.

Whilst not quite a lift Adam, I was looking at these

No where to keep them though and not enough space for me.

Some friends bought a 4-post hydraulic one they bought secondhand quite cheap. Then they had to shell out for:
- a single-->three phase convertor
- an electrician to fit it
- it popped a seal so an engineer to fix that
- and again for another seal
- loads of hydraulic fluid
It was rarely in service for 30% of the time - quite a moneypit.
I would therefore go for one with the screws in each post.
