Strange. My PC isn't particularly underpowered (2.8 Ghz quad core, 4 GB of memory running Windows 7, or thereabouts), but Elements runs like a dog and uses up all my processing power to the point where if I've got music playing at the same time, it breaks up whilst elements is saving images. It gives me "elements is not responding" for up to 5 minutes when saving images too.
I never had any of these problems with version 8, and the only thing I've changed on the setup is installing the new version of elements.
on earth they felt the need to make it such a depressing battleship grey screen is a completely different question!

I'm not an Elements user, but am guessing that similar to full fat PS it has some Performance options in a Preferences menu. Could be worth checking the settings in there to see if you can make an improvement. Also memory is pretty cheap, another 4GB of ram should be a low cost means of giving your PC a boost, it would certainly make a difference for PS, so would be reasonable to assume the same for Elements.

This ^^^ Have a look in the settings. Is it "scratch disk" you need to look for? Someone more technically capable will be along in a minute. But you need to check how much "space" and RAM you've permitted PSE to play with.ETA: operating system

I had PSE11 on an ok-ish spec laptop with Win7 and it was crap but I upgraded the laptop (and got Win8 into the bargain) and it's now ok...
I'm staggered at the difference between 8 and 11 though. I wouldn't have expected this much difference for essentially the same task.Kermit power said:
