V12VantageS vs 991GT3.
Discussion
I see on the Porsche forum they have over 50 pages on the new GT3 with loads of people ordering this car. Here there is hardley any mention of the new V12VS. When well specced the GT3 is over 120k , some discount on the new V12VS and they are very much competing. Has the Aston already lost?

A joke, right?Comparing a Porsche to an Aston is a fool's game. These marques are not competitors.
Sorry one and all ,the 991 GT3 will eat the V12S for breakfast. A couple of weeks ago I found myself with a dilemma do I jump ship to Porsche or stick with Aston Martin? Nobody can question the outright ability of the Porker. I chose to stick with Aston Martin for all the right reasons that suit me and there lies the point. With an Aston you do get the whole deal plus aspects that the German offering cannot aspire too. As owners you know what they are!
Im not sure they appeal to the same market
Porsche are fine performance cars, but not my cup of tea, not keen on the styling or engine out back thing
if you just want to go fast on a track, theres always something cheaper or faster...
if you want a fast GT that looks and sounds great you get an Aston

The new 991 GT3 is absolutely stunning. With PDK I bet it's absolutely fantastic, good to see they've moved on from the hardly racing car spec manual. I'm fairly sure it would destroy a V12VS on just about any track. It's the first modern Porsche (excluding the Carrera GT) that I would actually want to own.
For a car on the road, I think I'd take the V12VS just because of the noise and the fact it feels more special, but I'd be happy with either. A DB9.5 and a 991 GT3 would be a perfect 2 car garage

This is an interesting thread.
I use and love my V8 Roadster, and I did momentarily consider the V12R, however the man maths wouldn't work for me, so I ended up selling my BMW and buying a 991 4S Porsche as my daily driver!
The Aston and the Porsche are utterly different cars, but both in their own way brilliant.
The Porsche can appear "boring" as the PDK is set for economy on the auto setting.
However stick it in sport mode, and really grab it by the scruff, and it is absolutely incredible, and surprisingly practical!
The Aston on the other hand is always lovely to drive at any speed, and is a great place to be.
It doesn't however "come alive" at high speed, as the Porsche does.
I realise my comments are on "lower order" models, but would imagine that the different characters would still shine through on the halo cars.
I do believe that the two marques are "competitors" although in scale Porsche are obviously in a very different place.
If I was to sum up, I respect and admire my Porsche, but I love my Aston...

I am sure plenty of people with this sort of money would consider both,
I would!
Different cars for sure. In fact i would add a 2nd hand 458 to the mix and may pick that one..

The 991gt3 is the only car that would currently tempt me out of the DBS,the 997 gt3s were incredible but too much for everyday use,the 991 is thebest sports car I have driven the last few years ,the 991 gt3 is going to be magnificent,I am seriously debating breaking my no new car rule over this car.
The only reservation I have is the standard Carrera s is now so quick with the pdk box (in the real world faster than the DBS ,would I really need the extra power?)

Then there is Panamera and Rapide?
Surely they are competitiors and maybe the fool is the one who thinks they aren't?
Great thread. This is exactly the issue I have with the V12VS. Fundamentally it is an old car compared to its direct competitors for which I see the Porsche 991 GT3 (and also the forthcomming 911 turbo) and a lightly used 458. Both the latter cars are next generation stuff - the V12VS isn't and because of that it is too expensive at 150k and will depreciate like a brick. If Aston had left a manual option it would have had some differentiation but with the single clutch floppy paddle it is just last century.

The Aventador uses a single clutch gearbox and seems to manage ok. I'd say the V12VS is more of a GT than the other two. Plus comparing new to used isn't fair, a new 458 is what, best part of £200k? Also I thought the V12VS was around £120k not £150k.

You don't (and never have) buy an Aston because it wins the group test in a car magazine, you buy it because you want it. If you don't want it, then you get a Porsche, which probably did win the group test in the magazine. The 911 is and always will be a fantastic car, I have had two and loved them. But they were sold as I always wanted to drive the Aston, because I like driving it. It makes me happy. I'm sure the C4 went round corners and was quicker point to point, but I didn't care.
Ferrari make the best cars in the world, but they're not 'my thing'. Aston Martin is.
