Intermittent whine...
Discussion
from the engine bay (I'm pretty sure). Only happens when gears / clutch engaged not at standstill . Sounds a bit like a supercharger (which I know I unfortunately do not have). Have just had Diff and Gearbox oils changed so can count them out.
There's been no noticeable drop in power or additional clutch slip (yet). She's just gone past 34k and as far as I can tell the belt has been replaced at some point . So I'm left thinking / hoping it's a bearing somewhere and not the clutch on it's way out.
Really don't want her off the road whilst we've finally got this sunshine ! Anyway all pointers greatly appreciated as always .
Dave.

Nope ,not really.... It's helpfully indiscriminate
Runs throughout the rev range when it is happening . Only happens when the engine is under load / clutch engaged .Haven't managed to replicated it revving the engine whilst clutch is depressed. Hence the worry over the clutch.
I'll probably take it to my tame mechanic at the weekend if it decides to become permanent or worsen and see if he can pinpoint things.

Put a socket (15mm I think) on the tensioner pulley and lever it back so you can slip the belt off. Then turn each of the auxiliaries by hand: alternator, PAS, etc. Do they feel smooth? Is there any lateral play?
Worth checking the PAS fluid level as well. If it's low, that can make the pump whine.

Will do Doc. Thanks.
Should probably have looked at the PAS fluid level earlier as it does feel a bit inconsistent at times.
Having never fiddled with it , Would it matter if I went down to Halfrauds and bought brand x to top up with ? or is it like engine oil / coolant and needs to be the same stuff? .If it needs to be the same stuff I reckon I'll drain the system and refill with fresh as I don't know what's in there - if so how much does it need ?

Being Scottish and tight fisted, I would buy the cheapest one that says "power steering fluid".
The fluid level shouldn't drop dramatically.
Does the sound/pitch change as you release/engage the clutch pedal?
Could be the a part of the clutch hydraulics going, or the release bearing. If it is the hydraulics, it could be months before the clutch goes. Apparently my clutch had been whining for 2000 miles before it gave in, the same for my rover 75 (1500 miles done with dodgy clutch hydraulics). Or it could go very suddenly. it's just luck.
Also check all of the auxiliaries don't have any play in them.
