Happy 25th Birthday - VW Golf GTI 16v mk2

Today is my shed Golf's 25th birthday so I thought I'd post it up on here so you could all wish her many happy returns.

178,000 miles, a few dings and scrapes here and there, an slightly odd coloured door and currently only 3rd and 4th gear, but she now runs well and is great fun to drive. Now the quattro has gone it's time to spend some love.

It needs a good refresh depending on funds. I guess the order in terms of priorities/ cash are:

Gear linkage
MoT
Good service
Tyres
Fit retro Blaupunkt stereo and Fischer C-box (recent eBay purchases)
Get passenger window working
Dampers
Brakes (maybe larger Corrado discs)
Remove dings, especially on tailgate
Respray

Nice one! I recently decide that I needed a 205 gti in my life but went and bought a 1.8 20vt so I want a mk1 to put it in. I do like the shape on the mk2s though and they do seem easier to find.

I miss my big bumper MK2 greatly (see profile pic). Brakes are terrible, I was going to upgrade to the G60 disc's and callipers but it warranting rust repairs and numerous other bits and bobs I never actually got around to it before I regrettably sold it. Gear linkage is really cheap to do, but it offered the greatest reward when done, such a massive difference. I also fitted a mk3 golf weighted shifter between the box and the linkage itself in the engine bay, made for a much more positive and engaging change.

Haven't even bought a car to put it in yet! Seen a few shells about but not sure a bare shell is a good idea But i dont want to "ruin" a good example of a classic car either. There was a dry stored but non running Rallye on a vw site, 2.5k but that went pretty fast.

Corrado G60 brakes were the best mod I did to my Mk2 16V but I think you'll also need 15" wheels to fit them.

Being an E reg (88?) with those doors, OPs car 'should' be 256mm, so just a case of getting the calipers/carriers from a 280mm car (G60/Ibiza Cupra etc) and 15" wheels.

Hmm, was hoping to keep it looking stock so I'll have to see what fits in the standard 14"s.

I had one of these, a truly great car, 1986 model in jade green, I loved it for 7.5 years, I would have another one in a flash!

Me too but an 87 model!
Definitely a car that should have stayed.
