Having stress with mine again.

It has fuel in it, the battery has charge and I have had the booster pack on as well.

It turns over fine but the bloody thing wont fire up.

The only thing that worries me slightly is that I cant hear the fuel pump with the ignition on.
The fuse diagram is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard, it being handwritten 30 years ago it is faded to buggery so I cant tell which fuse is for the fuel pump. I cant get under the car to check the fuel pump wiring as it is parked with that side against the wall and I have just found out my jack is too tall to go under the diff.

I have replaced all the HT leads today anyway (and I have checked they are all on correctly)the dizzy cap seems fine and the rotor arm is ok.

any bright ideas?

I'd try to bottom out whether the problem is sparks or fuel.

Do have a spark at the plugs? If you've got a spark try squirting some easy start in the intake to see if the engine will catch. If it does then you know you have a fuel probelm then you can take it from there. I know nothing about the injection system on the 280 so you'll have to wait until some else comes along.

Tasmin got there first !! yes Do the simple stuff first.. carefully disc the fuel line to the filter under the bonnet get some one to turn on the ignition and crank and check for fuel. Arm yourself with rag and a jam jar make sure the fuel does not get in your eyes or all over the engine etc.

If there is fuel in the fuel rail then take a plug out and check for spark and wetness of the plugs which indicates flooding etc. If you have spark and wet plugs clean them all and try again. If no spark work backwards to the Ht lead and cap for spark etc.

Good luck let us know how you get on

Chris

Hi gog
i think jack and tasmin have missed the point. if the fuel pump isnt pumping, the fuel wont be delivered.

Definitely have spark, when I turn the ignition on I cant hear the fuel pump relay click and cant hear the fuel pump running so I am hoping it is the purple fuel pump relay. the ford dealers wanted a very reasonable (not) £52 inc vat for a fking relay!

motor factors 200yards from the stealers 5 minutes on the phone then yes mate I can get you one for the morning £24 inc vat
guess where I am buying from lol

Crank for a good few seconds then reach underneath and feel the fuel pump. If it's getting warm it's probably seized; happened to me once...

I have a bit of an access issue getting to the pump, it is on the side of the car thats up against the wall so I cant easily get to it. I will see if I can rope my OH into helping me push it out from the wall so I can try this

I mentioned it to the girl on the phone when we were filling the claim form in thumbup

should be a lot of salvageable stuff from the back half of the car.
