Seeing these old clips, it's amazing how close to the track spectators and marshals were. yikes
Must've been exciting (as well as dangerous).

I remember that Ferrari running out of fuel in the tunnel like it was yesterday, and I was nine years old when I watched it!
I don't think it was a fuel problem.

On the BBC commentary Hunt shouted "Pironi's out of fuel" - but I think it was an electrical issue.

I was expecting this thread to show a picture of a Safety Car and then not explain what it's for.

The safety car deployment for crisp packets floating down the pit straight seems to be a very recent thing, I've watched a few 'classic' races from 2003-2005 this year and it took something really bloody serious to call out the safety car.

I really don't remember any safety car periods in the 1980's or 1990's.
IIRC it's only been used in it's current form since about 1991 or 1992 when the FIA introduced more specific rules or scenarios for it's use.

Because they were not provided for in the rules until the early '90's (Wiki says '93). Wiki also says that there was one in a '70's race in Canada which would follow as back then the tracks had some autonomy on how to police their events rather than Bernie's merry band and rule book to cover all from start procedure to number of urinals for FOM/FIA personel.

Saftey Cars were very much 'an American thing' and derided in some circules in Europe as unncessary and purely there to spice up the show. Also on Ovals SC's are 100% required to stop there being 32 red flags per race.

Back in the day if a driver was injured or the track blocked to any real degree they would usually throw a red and have the race decided on aggrigate. That is neither necessary with safety cars, nor desirable as even those of us who understand what we are seeing and why need to wait until the timekeepers release the results to confirm if the guy that crossed the line in 4th was actually the race winner or 10th...

The "Safety Car" that was deployed at Mosport that year (1973) caused so much chaos and confusion that no one is sure to this day who really won that race. I think the victory was given to Peter Revson in the end.

I was expecting this thread to show a picture of a Safety Car that wasn't a hybrid Honda.

I assumed it was an error in the title, and was expecting a picture of a honda hybrid that wasn't a safe car. I've had to go find my own.

Turns out it is quite a safe car. I was wrong on so many counts.

Wasn't the first F1 race with a safety car the one at Imola when Ayrton Senna was killed - the theory being that dawdling around after the safety car led to his ride height being dangerously low?

No, 1973 Canadian GP.
