Has anyone done a race school or experience day in a car that they could recommend?
I would like a full day with access to an instructor – doesn’t have to be 1:1 but I would like to hear where I can improve and be given repeated attempts back on track to apply what I am taught.
Ideally I would like to be in a single seater but to be honest its not important. Im not fussed about Ferrari days or the qudos of an exotic car – just more interested in track time and good tuition.
I’ve heard of the kind of experience days where there is an instructor next to you in a saloon car who allows you to go as fast as you can in session 1 to observe you – then they basically tear you apart in the break and teach you how to do it properly for the rest of the day – this is what I’m after.
Any advice or recommendations?

Best way to do it would be to book an ARDS qualified instructor and a place on a track day. You will also need a car (duh!), so it's up to you if you want to use your own car or take a risk on something from Hertz, Avis, etc.
Obviously you can't be timed on a track day, but a good instructor will have his/her own data logger showing where you're losing time. What worked best for me was to book a full day with someone like Goldtrack, where it's split into 2 groups x 30 minutes all day. So, after your first 30 minutes you go back to the pits, look at the data, talk about areas for improvement, etc, then go out in the next 30m session and (hopefully) improve.
I can recommend Simon Mason, but if he's not available then most ARDS qualified instructors will get you on the right track (pun intended).

+1 palmersport is awesome as the instructors push you to get you going as fast at they think you can and spinning isn't a major issue. Some others I have been on were a bit conservative but then again I may have been driving like a numpty and not given them confidence to push me.Ah sorry think i jumped the gun abit. Palmersport is set up for corporate experiences and entertainment and is not really set up for race instruction. Its good at what it does but, I'd suggest, not what you seem to be after.
Maybe try to book a day with someone like BookaTrack and then book one of their Caterhams and an instructor of your own for a full day of one to one instruction (or share with on other maybe), someone like Simon Mason, http://www.simonmason.com/ who is a professional driver coach, not just a racing driver filling in time between budget crises!

I drive an i10 - its pretty fast and handles like its on rails! I have improved the performance by folding the rear seats flat and cadence clutching everywhere!
(ok all of that is lies apart from the car - i do have an i10 but its stock and obviously a bit naff) - obviously no use for the track.

Really not important as to what car you have,you can get into trouble driving anything.Sounds like you're one of the rare drivers who knows he could do better and wants to learn how to. Driving anything is about technique,high or low speed,high being the chosen mode,yes probably better off on a track. Dont forget to listen to what you're being told,the instructor,[hopefully]will know better than you.Build your speed rather than balls out straight away,increase it as you start to understand your limits and the cars. Its not a black art.
