V8S Battery Tray
Discussion
Someone gave me a heads-up on the Tour about the V8S battery tray working loose and damaging the bodywork from the inside. (Stuart?) We had a look and mine it seemed OK. Having now cleaned off all the road dirt I can see that the paint is starting to craze at the pint where the tray touched the body on the inside. I think I’ve caught it in time so a big “thank you”! Now, what holds the tray in place and how do I make it secure and prevent further damage?
When I bought mine the battery tray was making a serious bid for freedom. I ripped it out and discovered it was only very superficially glassed in. Having repaired the rear quarter panel, I made the tray bolt in. I welded 3 x M8 captive nuts to the mounting plate at the front of the tray, which goes up against the rear of the inner wheelarch and used stainless button head bolts & washers through from the wheel side, hence there are 3 button heads just visible behind the rear wheel. I used 3 x M6 button heads & washers through the under side of the rear quarter panel for the rear mounting. These are only visible if you bend down and look for them. I also put rubber sheet in between the mounts and the fibreglass, to provide some cushioning. I used some PU sealant under the bolts/washers to prevent water seeping in.
Years later it's all still perfectly intact after quite a bit of hard use, track days etc.
