I'm about to start my first salaried job in the NHS next month and want to make sure there are no cock-ups come first payday. The reason I think there may be an issue is that I've had two part time jobs this year (which I've now finished). Do I need anything from those jobs to pass onto my new employer to make sure they/HMRC are all happy with my tax code etc?

I've heard many nightmares of the NHS systems meaning people don't get paid the right amount or at all for many, many months.

Thanks smile

Nothing special about the NHS. SImply fill out a P46 and tick the box that says this is now my only job.

If you were on their payroll then they should have issued you with P45s.

Were you getting wages payslips from your part time job employers?

In other words, were they processing you [properly through the PAYE system?

Have you received any PAYE Notices of Coding from HMRC since you started working?

I received a payslip from one job (which was actually the NHS but in another county...what implications does this have? Do I need a P45 or will it be continuous employment, if anyone knows?).

Both jobs were 'proper' - PAYE etc.

Had no notices of coding.

You will have to ask your question to the employers. It would have been better for you if your change of role was just that and processed as a transfer. Whilst you then may have changed payrolls and perhaps even legal entity employers you would hopefully maintain continuity of service which would go towards other benefits and entitlements.

Thanks for the advice. Spoke to the outsourced payroll company and they said that if I had no P45 I'd be on emergency tax code - which is what I wanted to avoid. If I provide a P45 from both previous jobs then I will be taxed normally.

If I provide one I will underpay (it will be minimal so I don't mind that).

Alternatively I could just tick 'box B' on the P46 they will give me and I will be taxed normally but will have no 'free earnings'.

Sounds like it'll be fine. I'm just anxious to get my full pay as it's not a lot for the first few months!

Thanks chaps smile

In another "county"?

Please explain.

If you meant "another country" - that would make a big difference. Which country?

So, just another employer then.

All employers are obliged, by law, to give a P45 to any employee who leaves. You should contact them immediately and demand they give it to you.
