I know starting problems have been done to death, these symptoms are a bit different. I think.

When the car is cold it does start but struggles, turning over very slowly on the key until it fires. When hot it will not start at all, and the speedo and tach needles sweep back and forth across the dials. The fuel pump primes and I can hear a relay click when turning the key. It had a new battery a month ago but was not the problem. The charge warning light is working but has not been on. The starter is only 18 months old and all the connections to it seem ok. I was until recently hearing what sounded like the indicator relay clicking away behind the dash every time I turned the car off, for about 15 seconds or so. Car is a 94.

Any advice appreciated.

First. Check all chassis earthing points including battery cables are good and are tight.

Using a good set of jump leads, connect direct from the battery pos to the starter solenoid pos terminal.

Start car - any better?

As above but neg battery to starter body

Start car - any better?

Get a recon starter or depending on your ability, strip and fault find.

It could possibly be the solenoid, connection between solenoid and motor, brushes or windings.

Or something else.

Thanks I'll try the jump leads tomorrow. Dismantling the starter is probably too much for me so a trip to TVR Ecosse is probably the next step.
