First of all I must say my car does start. But when I put the key in the ignition and then it goes through the start up sequence. The precursor to when it starts is when I hear a high pitched whine.( Is that the immobiliser, because I've never been sure?) At that point I turn the key and hey presto I'm up and running!.....Or at least that's what should happen. Recently the point when you hear the high pitched whine is taking longer and longer to happen. Sometimes up to 30 seconds after the start up sequence. I know by pressing the button on the key fob, that always used to speed things up a little. But not any more.

What should I be checking and looking for to find out why its taking so long? Because my biggest fear is eventually its going to give up the ghost altogether!

Do u mean the fuel pump whine? It shouldn't whine as such.

Thanks Toady1. Ok its not the immobiliser, its the fuel pump biggrin . Even so, I do need to sort out this issue of why its such a long delay.

Normally it should start instantly after you pressed the key fob and the fuel pump primed.
Or do you have a preoiler system ?

I'm not aware that I have a preoiler system. In any case before I had issues with this. When I pressed the button on the key fob, it would allow me to start the car almost instantly.

The fuel pump is submerged in the tank and is difficult to hear - the whine is probably the electric power steering system priming? Does it sound like it coming from the front of the car or the rear?

That is another thing that concerned me because the whine comes from the front and I was fairly certain the fuel pump was at the rear.

it may help to disconnect the battery for a short while and then reconnect as this maybe resets the alarm/immobilizer.

Oh, i always thought this is coming from the fuel pump as it seems to come from the rear. Didn't know priming is from the power steering pump.

Is it? I thought the fuel pump was in the passenger side rear wheel arch area, fixed to a lower chassis rail, along with the stupidly positioned fuel filter?

This.

If you check the top of your fuel tank in the boot there is a small round access panel - this has to be removed to gain access to the submersible pump. The motor for the electric power steering is at the front and near the rack and this is what makes 'most' of the audible noise when the ignition circuit is activated via switching the immobiliser off.

To the OP - check your power steering fluid level - if its something that's gradually been getting worse it may need topping up. This may mean you have a small leak so check for that too - this might not mean fluid on the floor either as it could be a seal that's gone and the fluid could be leaking into one or both of the gaiters?

Power steering is bottom right of this photo

the fuel pump is indeed in this location on Chim's, Griffs and Cerb's but not on my Tamora...assume the other T cars are the same especially the T350 and Sagaris? Cant say for the older cars...

That'll be where I'm getting confused then.

I knew I'd seen the pipe going into the fuel filter, hence why I thought it was the pump. I think it's in this location on Tuscans too.

Further to the issue in starting the car. I noticed the red led next to the steering wheel on the right hand side flashing. Although I've never done this before; I had this vague recollection of sticking the black 'usb' type device, that came with the keys, into it. In an instant the red led stopped flashing. I then put the key in the ignition and she fired up straight away!

Although I've never had to do this before. Is this what I now have to do get the car running? Or is there an underlying issue that I'm masking by circumnavigating the normal way of starting the car?

Are we talking about the immobiliser key?

Just in case I'm missing something here, why the email and not a reply? It seems there's more than one confused...
