Home water cooled rebuilds

There's a whole load of enthusiasts who rebuild and modify their own air-cooled engines often using Wayne's book (and a great bed-time read it is too).

Surely there is a need to be able to rebuild your own made-from-chocolate water cooled engine too. Anyone do this apart from the professionals?

Unfortunately the parts cost and tooling will always price the enthusiastic amateur out of a home rebuild; if you replaced the cases you'd be 3-4k+ in already (there isn't a cheap repair method save for the solutions offered by Hartech / Autofarm etc) and the later engines aren't like the early ones that, save for oil leaks, everything is mostly reusable.
