If you are entitled to free prescriptions what do you need to show the chemist to prove this?
The reason I ask is that when my OH goes to the local supermarket to get her prescription she is asked whether she pays for them and always answers Yes. In response to this she is told that she is one of the only ones and most don't pay. She has seen people tell the chemist that they don't pay but they don't ask for any proof of this.
Do chemists just take people's word for it as of course everybody would be honest!!

In theory, all the forms are collated and cross-checked at the back end.

When I was told I had cancer my doctor sent me a form to sign & send off and now I get free prescriptions for the next 5 years!
I have a repeat prescription for my asthma stuff & when I go to the chemist, I just put a tick in the box to say Im exempt and have only been asked once to show the card - not the same place every time either.

So checking won't become widespread then. The net benefit is too small.
88% of prescriptions are free, out of interest.
Thank goodness they do thorough checks then. That's put my mind at rest that anybody claiming free prescriptions when they don't deserve them will be weeded out.
Of course, it would be easier to issue people with a card if they are entitled to free presciptions that they could show and this would save any checking of forms. But that would be too sensible! And a breach of human rights no doubt.

Cards wouldn't work, as idiots would lose them. Perhaps a tattooed barcode?
