How to start a Mazda MX5 1.8 after two years in a garage
Discussion
I'm an Aussie retired to Paris and the proud owner of the car of my dreams - an LHD 1994 Mazzie 1.8, originally sold in the US and in wonderful condition. I drove it from the UK to Paris, rented a garage for it, then got cancer, then recovered, and now I want to drive it.
After two years the Westco battery was flat, so I swapped it for a Bosch, and now it won't start.
When the new battery went in, the alarm started screaming, so I cut the alarm cable. Now the four yellow lights flash and there's no sign of ignition. Obviously I've upset something I have to reset.
But what? Any help will be vastly appreciated.

Bit late to the show but...
A similar thing happened to me with the alarm when the battery went flat once (a C-Tek charger's worth its weight in gold, I must say!). Locked & unlocked car doors & alarm sorted itself out.
I think the alarm recalls the state the doors used to be in so it'll go off if the doors are in a different state than it was prior to the battery going flat.
Hope that helps even if it's a few weeks late!

You're bloods absolutely worth bottling, as we say in the sunburned country. I've had no end of trouble with getting this old Maz back on the road. But in the end it turned out to be security equipment that, as always, bends over backwards so your car is still there when you want it. In other words, hard to steal was just another way to say hard to start - even for the owner.
I was on the point of sending the immobiliser to the UK for reprogramming when, after a day on the dear old Ctek charger, plus paying attention to replacing the radio face panel, buckling the seat belt, shutting the doors, turning off all lights, using the REMOTE to deactivate any locks/alams, and then using the chipped key in the ignition, we achieved liftoff.
As of today the car is accepted for France, with just minor stuff yet to do.
So thanks again for your suggestions. Had I gone initially to Mazda, the bill would have been like an overseas phone number. Luckily I avoided that, so it was all a bit of a triumph of just working things through slowly but surely.
