Starting pay in public sector

Hi,

How does pay scale work in Universities? I have been invited for an interview in the University for a IT position (Grade 7). I am very much interested in this role but Grade 7 Starting salary point is lower than what i am earning now. My current salary is equal to the Maximum point of Grade 7 in that University.

So my question is, will i start from the starting point or it can be any depending on experience? If it is going to be on starting point then i think there is no point of going to interview.

It varies from organisation to organisation.

In some places everybody starts at the bottom, in other places you can start higher up if you have lots of relevant experience.

If top of scale is equivalent to your current salary I don't see why you would want to move?

Don't forget everyone in the public sector is on fantastic pay and pension, loads of holidays and does beggar all when their in, According to the daily mail and pistonheads .

Grade 7 is a pretty good grade and has a wide band. It will overlap with grade 6 and 8 to some extent.

Do look at the salary. Do also look at the full package - working conditions, union protection, vast quantities of18-21 yr old girls in the bar, etc... Oh, and nobody ever gets fired from a uni role. If you are halfway competent you will shine.

But you my get frustrated if you are ambitious. The pace of change and mechanisms for investment move at glacial pace..

Also. Private sector to pubic sector is easy. Universities are perceived by private sector as being public sector. It can be hard to make the transition back.
