I'm building a rally car and have a dilemma with seat bets. Stage rallying demands full harnesses but I cannot find a set of harnesses that are also legal for the road and will pass an MOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

also new MOT rules regarding dash warning lights - airbags for example, where again MSA rules they have to be disabled but that isn't allowed by MOT, not sure about steering locks which again have to be disabled. There are probably other anomolies I haven't thought about yet.

Any ideas - legal obviously

Genuine Competition Cars were excempted from the new rules on warning lights, airbags etc, it won't be problem for you.

People have been MOT cars with Harnesses for years and still do, again it won't be a problem.

As above, no problem.

Road going Caterfields have harnesses and they pass ok.

There are provisions for competition cars in the MOT guide, race harnesses are OK as is removing steering locks and airbags etc. Just make sure you don't get an arse of a tester that doesn't read the rules.

Car Harnesses come in two varieties

EEC Approved Road going

and

FIA Approved for motorsport

there aren't any that are approved for both (Schroth used to do one but that is discontinued)

so Caterhams etc. use the 'push button' road legal and not the higher spec twist release motorsport only version.

I've been putting my Triumph race car through MoT every year, for years.
Originally four, now six-point harness and the inspectors have never even given me an advisory on them. I think yours will know that a race harness is better than a road-going three point retractable.

My Westfield passed it's MoT last week without any trouble at all. I was expecting raised eyebrows about the useless windscreen wipers, but the guy just checked that they moved. Nothing whatever was said about the harnesses.

If you are building a stage rally car you have no choice it has to be FIA compliant (and in date) or you can't rally it. But as has been said before, the MOT system has a get out clause for competition cars, if that didn't exist no rally cars would get an MOT which they need to run.

Maybe Westfields, but the new Caterham has the twist release I believe. Well, it's an option as its what I have in mine wink
