Discussion
Looking a,mriound for surround speakers on ebay has caused me to think about upgrading my old sound system.
The two yamaha units can be had for £380

I have read some rave on here about them.
The nad
Amp I've wanted for years when I used to take note of these things I for some reason thought they would be going cheap on ebay because the amp. Is 13 years old now but they are going for around £200/240 the Cd542 £100/130 ish
So give or take similar money. Used v new. Nad more powerful but people seem to be rating this Yamaha set up.
Speakers are quad 12l obviously I can audition the Yamaha system but not the nad.
Suggestions?

Well I've ordered the yamaha amp and cd.
Read plenty of good reviews
I have not got heard the yamaha, but there must be a reason why the NAD even after 13yrs, still commands a price which is still 50% of its original... Read plenty of good reviews

I have it coupled with a Musical Fidelity CD and cannot bring myself to "upgrade" to anything... Read the reviews - simply untouchable for the money when new, and even more so these days...
Yeah I know plus I'd probably still be able to sell it on in a few years for wht bought it for. Must admit as well the risk of buying something like that from ebay put me off.
In the end my lust for shiney new stuff won out. Also to keep her happy there is an I phone doc that pkugs right in and looks neat ( I know here must be others ways of sorting that with the nad)
With the tEAC Internet radio I've also ordered it will keep her happy and she won't notice the bills

Used to run the Nad C370 a few years ago. Stonking amp. I paid £200 for it, then sold it on for £220 about 2-3 years later. Says it all really.
Loads of power to drive pretty much anything. Loads of inputs, two pre-outs, two tape loops, separate zone A-B setup, remote etc. My speakers at the time weren't that hard a load, so I never really pushed it, no bad thing. Still sound great. I eventually upgraded to an Exposure XXV (£1K when new, cost me £450 second hand), which was a good step up from the Nad.
Only niggles with the Nad:
If you like to bi-wire, you have to do this via the Zone A-B functionality and have to keep turning on Zone B each time you turn on the amp.
It can get hot, budget on giving it a few inchs ventilation space above. In fact, there was a notice from Nad saying they replace some parts if they over heated, even though ultimately it was due to users not giving it adequate ventilation. Doubt they do that any more.
Lastly, the amp is a huge beast, but the volume knob is this right diddy affair, which does look a bit daft.
