so, I had a bit of a run today, using the Zombies run app on my phone.

i had not realised just how unfit I had become until today, as I couldnt run for an extended distance, (say more than 150 metres) and I used to be a sprinter and not long distance, only doing long distance when at school when doing cross country.

realised that turning it into HIIT or even just general interval training would be a better idea as I wouldnt keel over and die before I get home by doing interval training, as it would give me at least a bit of a break between higher speed running.

was fastish running/slow running then walking and the running again and so on, with the odd sprint thrown in for good measure to see if i can sprint like I used to be able to. with each 'stage' about 2 mins of each

all was going well, I was nackered after 13 mins of this, as that was when i got home from just going round the block, but when I got home and stopped walking to get in the front door, i felt really light headed and when I got into my living room, I looked at my PSVITA that was on the sofa and i started getting flashing vision a bit, like light coming through a set of venetian blinds being strobed, and that carried on wherever i looked for about 5-6 seconds. i think i pushed a bit too hard as I had not run properly apart from the odd few/up to 10 metre sprint v rarely in about 6 years.

I also was sweating more than I have done in years, i dont usually sweat even in v hot places like 55 degrees C in the canary islands. but this day, sweat was everywhere, even had sweaty shins, I have NEVER had sweaty shins in my life. might not have helped that as i have pretty long hair, nothing like Mat777/airbrakes btw just longish and i was wearing a hat to keep it out of my eyes, and jeans + t shirt as i just decided to walk out the front door while loading zombies run on my phone and just going for a run without changing into anything suitable for running on a pretty hot day.

but, I did have zombies chasing me, so i didnt want to get caught and eaten and lose all of the items I had picked up along my run like first aid kit and water that the camp needed.

anyone else ever have this wierd strobing lines for a few seconds after stopping running? it might have been that the light was on in the living room and what with adrenaline, i could see the pulses of the bulb, not sure if the new energy saving ones do this, but strip lights i can quite often see the pulsing of them when no one else can do.

so, anyone else ever get this effect and do you know why it is caused.

secondly, I saw a thing a while ago about couch to 5k, anyone done this, and how long did it take them to go from not being able to run more than a few yards to the full 5k? as i actually really like to run, so just want to know about the sort of time frame im looking at to get there as zombies run has got a 5k, 10k and 20k mode and would like to get through the entire story of it,

Sounds like you picked one of the hottest days to try and get back into shape. I've had the flashing dots, just from sprint sessions. At least your making an effort. If your worried go and see the doc or nurse for an mot and then take it steady to build yourself up.

Was a stupid day to start your training - and choosing the wrong clothes doesn't help. It's probably heat exhaustion. Or dehydration.

So what's your next trick? P90X in a sauna?

It's not just about rebuilding your fitness levels but acclimatising to the environment so that you can train suitably. As an example, I played tennis for 2 hours in the sun yesterday but I'd been playing tennis every week as the heat has been building up (although it was bloody freezing and wet on court about 5 weeks ago!), also I'd been training in a room with no aircon or openable windows for about a year. In other words, my body is used to training in overly warm conditions.

Skim read the post as it seemed such nonsense....but have I got this right? Unfit bloke that cant run more than a few yards before he needs to walk goes out to run sprint intervals in jeans and a hat on the hottest day of the year while his hair does a Bon Jovi impression.....then wonders why he feels funny?

You're stting me? There is an app to make you run?? Do you have to watch the phone all the time? Does it tell you which foot to put forward etc?

no not really, its a good app as its a good way to push myself a bit harder, as its a bit more motivation to not get caught so you push harder and you use headphones.

How are you feeling today? Presumably you've had lots of fluids.

Why push your self harder, you are unfit, just take it easy to start with, it will come.
Push your self hard to early and you will pick up an injury, push harder when you are fit.

yeah do feel a lot better today, after i stopped yesterday, i really was out of it slightly for a good while, think it might have been a mix of pure heavy exhaustion and a endorphins. an yeah had a fair bit to drink after it ran out of me.

an yes, i would say it is a pretty good app, as I wouldnt have pushed as hard as i did without it, plus listening to it while running gives you something to push for and also take your mind off running long distance, as i have never been good at that

well i pushed near to as hard as i could to gauge what I could do. As for the last 6 years i have been pretty ill and unable to do any kind of exercise, its only since about november last year i could start even walking about without pain as i have had a few operations to sort me out.

in my eyes, if you dont push hard the first time to gauge just what you are capable of, you will not try to better that the next time, or even try to just do the same the next few times to be able to better it after a while.

that might just be me, as when i was fit and healthy, i used to be super fit and push as hard as i could, and now, i am unfit and cannot push near to what i used to do and only yesterday realised just how bad it had got, muscles gone through atrophy from not being used and weight loss, luckily since xmas i have actually put on a bit more than 3 stone from loosing less than that after being ill, so actually weigh more now that before i got ill.

i will listen to any help i can get, as i dont want to injure myself tbh as i got so fed up not being able to do anything without pain and suffering and getting light headed and just nackered too easy.

Don't gauge your fitness on how fit you used to be, you will injure yourself. Just take 5-10mins to have really good think about what you have gone through and how you can slowly rebuild yourself. The first mistake people in your situation make is they think they can just beast it to get back into shape, wrong, slowly does it will get you back to fitness.

the only reason i was gauging my fitness to what i used to be was to see how unfit i am now.

not trying to do what i used to do, just see how much i could do compared to before.

LOL, no, i wasnt really thinking yesterday, just had the urge to get out and run.

went out again today, the same route, wasnt pushing as hard, but did it 2 mins quicker, so either my technique is better today, or my body is actually remembering that it can run.

legs hurt even more today though, might take tomoro off to rest them rolleyes

yes, i know that, i dunno, i just see what i can do the first time, to then know what level of strength and fitness i am and then go accordingly

lol, no, had to wear a baseball cap though, to keep my hair out my eyes, might actually get it cut soon cos its a hell of a lot hotter with long hair than with short.

Just jog gently, forget times, it means bugger all after one day.

after i ran, and had dinner, got into a cold bath and soaked my legs for a bit, in v cold water.

now, they hurt a lot less.

thought i would give it a go after seeing eddie Izzard do it after his marathons, and it does work quite well to stop them aching after a run.

Try a wheelie bin full of ice and water, have a friend (not for long) hold your shoulders to keep you in it.
