Had a great run down to the Fest yesterday, boy was it HOT!

On a couple of occasions on the way back the car seemed to die momentarily, just for a second, under acceleration and then it was OK again. I'm thinking fuelling or ignition - any ideas?

Depends on the hesitation. My first thought would be loose ignition connection.

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't think so, it was too sudden - just as if the ignition had been turned off and then back on again.

The ignition amplifier has a finite lifetime, generally in the range 60,000 to 100,000 miles.

When they fail, they often faff about for a few months prior, then, oops!

Did you just have the first signs of ignition amplifier failure?

People have devised a method of testing the ignition amplifier including a neat idea for testing it for intermittent failure.

Those processes have been refined and can be read from here - part 2, if you are interested!

ALTERNATIVELY

You described the events to be 'under acceleration' which means that the throttle pot invokes the acceleration enrichment circuits inside the ECU. Usually just once per acceleration event.

However, if the throttle pot is damaged it can send erroneous or perhaps multiple (grouped) enrichment signals and for a brief moment the engine is over-fuelled.

That in turn - a burst of over-fuelling during acceleration - may be the cause of hesitation you describe as the mixture is momentarily way too rich to burn in a hot engine.

Really easy to check for a fault thereabouts - if you need help you'll find it on the same website.

Years ago I had similar symptoms, I was using one of those screw in battery isolators. Even if you haven't got one of those, do the simple checks like battery terminal connections.

Go out in the cool of the night and see if the problem persists. Ignition amp should be a service item.
