Right....I'll probably get flamed for this but here goes...

I'm far, far from a heavy chap, my BMI is bang on 20 and i'm an endurance runner/cyclist and train around 6 days a week. I eat very healthily pretty much every day (usually get 9-10 of my 5/day, lots of fish, chicken, brown pasta/rice etc) but every now and again i get cravings for bad food.

Not a problem i hear you say....but when i eat bad food i don't just eat a bit, say 1 or 2 chocolate bars i EAT....LOTS. Now, i'm talking i can quite happily devour a 500ml tub of ben and jerrys and finish that off with a good 3-4 chocolate bars. The other day i had OVER 1/2 a kilogram of pick 'n' mix....no problems, but i still wasn't "satisfied". My issue isn't the fact that in reality doing this once per week (which is about right, i'll usually eat NO bad food at all for about 5-6 days or so) with the amount of exercise i'm currently doing (approx 120-160 miles/week cycling and 20-30 miles/week running) doing this won't actually do me any harm, and the fact i'm just 8 stone 10 or so means putting on 1-2lbs idn't an issue......it's the fact i always feel so guilty after doing this.

Why? it's almost the guilt feeling that makes me not eat bad food for a whole week. I know it's probably better to have a little bit every day, but 1-2 bits of chocolate just don't do it for me, it has to be a lot... why do i feel so guilty every time, yet keep going back for more!?

it's pathetic i know....but i'm sat here. have just had my dinner, and a big bowl of ice cream is beckoning me hehe

Get a grip man! It's the reason you train hard, you can enjoy the BAD stuff!!!! It could also be a sugar addiction, we all have it, kicking in from the training. The guilt bit, that's just your mind telling you all the lies you have read in Cosmo! wink

That isn't healthy and you should try somehow to curb it. Not because of the weight or anything else but purely psychologically. You will start to associate eating with bad feelings and if you binge eat the next step is to throw it up afterwards. Especially easy with liquid type calories such as ice cream.

You really, really don't want to got down this path.

this is my main concern, i'm not worried about the weight, it's the guilt/psychological issue. I weigh myself once every couple of weeks or so and i fluctuate by the odd 1-2lbs (perfectly normal, of course) but generally i'm always around 8st10lbs, give or take which, for 5ft 6" is absolutely fine.

it's daft i know.....

I think it's probably normal for your body to be craving the food that society tells us is naughty when you're doing that much exercise and normal to feel guilty afterwards; just that you're in the lucky and increasingly abnormal position of not needing to feel guilty!

Yeah, same for me. Nothing for three weeks then half a gateau and five eclairs.

Because you're addicted to exercise and have been conditioned to believe you should feel guilty. Tastes nice though, doesn't it?

I really wouldn't worry about it until you wake up and see a beach ball in the mirror biggrin

You're not alone (I have exactly the same thing sometimes, just without quite so much of the other good stuff), your diet sounds good and you do more than enough moving around!

I work permanent nights. This week I have done a few extra's. so ended up on 7 in a row.

I have had a McDonalds Breakfast after each nightshift this week!

Off home shortly to watch SuperSize me! Hopefully that might put me off in future. I am lucky though that I can eat for England and never put any weight on at all smile

If you exercise that amount and religiously eat brown rice, I would say you are borderline obsessive to maintain that regime anyway! wink

PLease don't feel guilty, though all that pure sugar is probably playing havoc with your insulin/blood sugar levels.

I expect its the "real" you trying to top up your calorie intake though. I know endurance athletes at their peak need 10k calories a day. You can't always get that from eating normally. So maybe introduce treats into your daily meals that aren't quite so bad for you; Dried fruit, nuts, some chocolate etc, and up your calorie intake.

I do this as well. It's called Christmas. I have fun while I do it. It's a reward and all rewards are there to be enjoyed.

As said, you have earned the right to eat without guilt, so do so.

A number of people can suffer from this, but its obviously not seen as a big issue in 'healthy/bodybuilding' circles.

There was a thread about this here;

You probably need more clean calories in your diet, I suspect it's your body's way of telling you you need more fuel.

I'm the same as almost, see here: http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Eat as clean as you like during the week, however usually at the weekend I will just go nuts on any sort of bad food. I've previoulsy driven to the cinema before just to buy pic n mix, and spent £10 or so in the process.

Only difference between your situation is that it tends to hamper my desired weightloss.
