A couple of times in the last couple of weeks I graunched a gear as I was changing up the box.

I thought I was getting careless since I had only been driving the Tiv once or twice a week and the rest of the time I was driving an auto.

Tonight, after a frustrating weekend of working on my other toy, I decided to go for a run in the Tiv and as soon as I back the car out of the drive I noticed the clutch was only disengaging drive right at the bottom of its travel. I drove about a mile and decided it was best to head home.

Initially I suspected the clutch master cylinder would be leaking but I have taken the carpets out and there is no sign of fluid on the carpets or surrounding the clutch pedal or the back of the cylinder.

Has anyone else experienced this.

Is it most likely to be the master or slave cylinder.

Search facility has not been very helpful.

I would appreciate ideas/advice

Have you checked your fluid level? Is the pedal soft ?

I had this a few days ago and touch wood... it's been fine since I bled it. Dunno where the fluid went - there is none on the drive or in the garage.... I think in my case the fluid was just very low when I bought the car and I never checked it (stupid hatch and stupid lazy me)

I've just had my slave and master cylinders replaced. The master dumped loads of fluid into the foot well. The slave presented as a slow dripping. If your foot well is dry it is likely either the slave or the clutch plate itself. Try laying a piece of cardboard under the car (over night/a few days) to catch the drips. If this yields nothing (and the clutch fluid level remains normal) I guess it'll be the clutch plate.

Thanks for the responses so far.

As far as I can recall there is no soft feel just doesn't bite until very low on the pedal.

There is no fluid in the car or under the car (clean garage floor) but I haven't had chance to check the fluid yet. That's a job for tonight after work.

Good point on the fork. I'll try and get the car on the ramps and see if that's the problem.

Any other ideas to investigate tonight?

Update:

Came home this evening and removed clutch master cover - the reservoir was empty save for a very slight amount at the bottom.

I lifted the car on the ramps and no sign of problems with the slave cylinder so I filled the reservoir and bled it with an eezibleed kit.

The pedal is back and after a 20 mile test run all seems right again.

I will keep an eye on it over the next few weeks.

I checked the clutch arm. I assume it punches through on the fulcrum point in the middle when it goes. Seems fine.

Can't imagine where the fluid has gone although the reservoir is tiny and it could be the increased travel as the clutch wears I suppose.

I have checked for weeping as best as I can (it's a TVR after all.

I haven't sealed the wing cover so I'l keep checking the fluid level.

Also had my clutch slave and master cylinders replaced last week. (Also posted on here.)

If the master is leaking, the fluid won't be on the garage floor, it will be in your foot well. And assuming it's a slow leak it will be soaking in to the carpet, undetected. So you won't notice it until you either remove the carpet, remove the inspeaction cover and check the level, or.... lose the clutch! thumbup

I checked all of the carpet and surrounding areas but there is no trace at all of clutch/brake fluid. Nothing, Nada, zilch, bugger all, not a sausage, bereft of fluid it lies dry.

I did another 20 miles last night and a further 30 this morning so, although I am trying not to determine the quantity of fowl before they emerge from their calcium ovoids, I think it might be OK............. for now anyway.

Good news is that there's a puddle of clutch fluid under the car so its the slave cylinder not the master

I've had this exact same thing... gonna change both cylinders I think.

Pedal floppy, bite low and not a drop in the reservoir. After a top up & bleed same thing happened about 500 miles later, weirdly it was after sitting for a day or two just went to go for a drive and it was borked.

Topped it up again and keeping an eye on it every few drives, seems to lose about a cm per hundred miles...

No sticky carpets or spots on garage floor... I assume that driving vibrations are aiding the master cylinder to leak...

I've had the same thing. First time was probably 18 months ago. I topped it up, and bled the air out. Then left the sealant off the cover and kept checking the level over a few weeks before re sealing, all was well until this morning....

Jumped in the car and no clutch, I'll probably re build the M/C this time.

Here's a tip though, don't leave it out in the rain with no sealant on the clutch M/C cover!!

Slave cylinder from local Land Rover dealer quoting £20+VAT complete.

Part number on side of mine is 99364 - a Lockheed unit on a 2000 4.0 Chim

I will collect it later today and if it fits will post up the Land Rover part number

Update - rang local Land Rover dealer and got Mrs to take original in and collect replacement - Got home and it was identical except the union thread on the new one was imperial whereas the original was metric (yes I do have that the right way round)

I went back to Rockingham Landrovers and he went through his stock until he found the correct one which is (Landrover part number) FTC5072 and cost £33.00 inc VAT. - Bolted straight on and now all I need to do is fill and bleed it (hopefully!)

Hope that helps someone
