what oil?

Please can anyone advise me as to what is the best oil for a 1979 3.0 non turbo sc Porsche. Also gear box oil please thanks in advance

The Porsche approved oils list only covers vehicle from around the mid-80s to the present. Earlier models I think you probably should consult your dealer for at least what Porsche recommends.

Check that. Sort of. I consulted an older Porsche approved oils list and it covers model years 1937 to 1998 and guess what?

Nearly the same oils are listed in this document as in more recent documents.

One notable difference: I see a Mobil Super 10w-40 oil listed. All the rest of the oils are 0w-40 or 5w-40 with one 5w-50 (not a typo for 15w-50!) oil.

My WAG would be any oil from a current approved oils list would suffice but like I said earlier check with your favorite dealer to see if it has anything more recent for the pre-1984 models.

can only tell you what a mechanic from Hartech told me.
Go for a thicker oil rather than thinner, as older engines are abit looser
